What We Offer
The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The starting salary range for this position is $66,000-86,000/year, based on education and experience. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location
This position is located at the Wellington Webb Building, located at 201 W Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80202.
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees’ physical work location is based upon the position’s job duties and requirements, customer service and responsiveness, team and individual performance, and business needs and requirements. Our current practice requires in-office work for all employees for a minimum of three days per week. Business needs and initial onboarding may require additional days in the office.
What You’ll Do
The City and County of Denver’s Community Planning and Development Department (CPD) is seeking a highly motivated and creative preservation professional for our Landmark Associate City Planner position with our Landmark Preservation team. Landmark Preservation is a vital and integrated component of Community Planning and Development. Denver’s landmark structures and historic districts enhance the city’s unique identity, quality of life, and economic vitality.

The Landmark Associate City Planner will primarily work on design review for properties in our historic districts and individual landmark structures, as well as evaluation of significance for demolition applications Citywide.
Primary responsibilities with include:
- Reviewing a wide range of proposed projects in historic districts and at individual landmark sites using adopted design guidelines and policies. This includes reviewing applications for signs, site work, additions, alterations, and infill construction in our 60 historic districts and for 364 individual landmarks
- Reviewing and researching applications for demolition and Certificates of Demolition Eligibility to determine designation potential before approvals can be issued
- Processing applications for residential state income tax credits, and helping historic property owners obtain tax credits associated with their rehabilitation projects
- Providing seamless and high-quality customer service to help applicants navigate the Landmark Preservation design review and demolition review processes, assisting property owners, architects and contractors at the initial pre-application phase of a project, and providing guidance to applicants on how to develop projects that meet Landmark Preservation program and ordinance requirements
- Preparing staff reports and making staff presentations before the Landmark Preservation Commission and the Lower Downtown Design Review Commission
- Assisting the Landmark Preservation team on complex regulatory improvements such as updates to the design guidelines
- Ensuring compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
- Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation, or a closely related field (strongly preferred, not required)
- Excellent writing, public speaking and broad communication skills, as well as interpersonal and collaboration skills
- Proven track record of customer service excellence; ability to advocate for applicants and get their goals achieved while also meeting required CPD rules, policies and standards
- Creative problem solver; thinks outside the box; detail oriented
- Team player but also works well independently
- Works well in a fast paced, high volume environment; works well under pressure
- Enthusiastic and eager to learn/grow; respectful of others and works well with diverse populations
- Demonstrated knowledge and use of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, skill in reading architectural drawings, experience performing design review for designated historic properties and districts, and knowledge of architectural history
- Ability to visually identify potential landmark properties and evaluate the integrity and significance of sites, and experience researching historic properties and applying designation criteria to evaluate historic significance and eligibility for designation
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Education requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in City or Regional Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, Engineering, or a related field
- Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of entry-level professional planning experience which includes participating and assisting in developing planning projects, goals, and guidelines and conducting planning studies and research in a variety of social, economic, and physical areas
- Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education
- Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
