Currently, the Town is recruiting individuals for the position of Lab Analyst I. In this role you will perform technical and responsible laboratory work in performing chemical and bacteriological analyses at the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility. The Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility is rated to treat up to 56 MGD and is located at 1400 Wimberly Rd. in Apex.
Anticipated hiring range: $53,372.80 – $62,108.80 (range may be higher for candidates with directly related experience)
Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Water System Laboratory Supervisor.
(Note: This is a generic class specification that applies to laboratory work in both a water reclamation facility and the water treatment plant. Individual duties may vary.)
Typical Tasks
Collects surface water, drinking water or wastewater samples for compliance and non-compliance testing;
Analyzes regulatory and process control samples for bacterial contaminants and chemical parameters using standard laboratory methods within proper holding times;
Performs simple to advanced analysis of water and wastewater using instrumentation such as: turbidimeter, total organic carbon analyzer, automatic titrator, multiparameter benchtop meter, spectrophotometer, microscope, gas chromatography instrument, and ion coupled plasma mass spectroscopy instrument;
Performs quality control testing with each analysis to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results produced and performs corrective actions when QC is outside acceptable limits;
Maintains state laboratory certifications by participating in performance evaluation studies and participating in inspections performed by State regulators;
Enters data into the laboratory computer database and/or Laboratory Information Management System;
Interprets laboratory tests, documents and prepares required reports;
Ships coolers to external state certified contract laboratories;
Prepares culture media, solutions and reagents;
Washes glassware and prepares sample bottles for chemical or microbiological testing;
Maintains an inventory of chemicals, solutions, culture media, required forms, and laboratory equipment and materials;
Troubleshoots equipment failures in the lab and repairs equipment if possible;
Consults with pretreatment, distribution, operations and maintenance staff on water quality issues;
Handles inquiries concerning water quality by industrial customers and the public;
Provides basic training on new laboratory equipment for the non-lab personnel;
Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, materials, and equipment, including those used in standard chemical and biochemical analysis of water or wastewater; general knowledge of the principles of organic and inorganic chemistry; general knowledge of Excel and Office programs, or similar; general knowledge of plant operations; ability to prepare laboratory reagents and assemble laboratory apparatus for chemical and biochemical analysis; ability to take water samples from the field, and perform the necessary laboratory tests; ability to prepare and keep accurate records and prepare reports; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Work in this class may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and unpleasant surroundings.
An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing stairs and ladders. Moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) is required in performing the work. Visual acuity is necessary to perform precise measurements. An employee must also be able to hear, talk, smell and distinguish color.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in chemistry or environmental science and some experience in performing laboratory tests, preferably in a treatment plant laboratory.
Possession of a valid driver’s license with a good driving history.
Minimum of a C Surface Operator’s license, or the ability to achieve certification within 1 year.
PREFERS:
NC Waterworks Operators Association Process Control Chemistry and/or Total and Fecal Coliforms Certification
