Access Now is a growing international human rights organization dedicated to defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world, including issues of privacy, security, freedom of expression, and transparency. Our policy, advocacy, technology, and operations teams have staff presences in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East/North Africa (MENA), North America, and South/Southeast Asia, to provide global support to our mission.

About the Fellowship

The #KeepItOn Data Analyst participates in and amplifies the #KeepItOn campaign to fight internet shutdowns globally. They primarily participate in data collection, analysis, and verification, as well as outreach and engagement. They engage with crucial Access Now staff and organizational partners to help advance the campaign’s goals. They gain an understanding of a significant Access Now project, primarily from a data, policy, and advocacy perspective. The #KeepItOn Data Analyst is an essential member of the team upon which others rely, and who is responsible for ensuring the success of a high-priority Access Now initiative.

The #KeepItOn Data Analyst reports through Access Now’s #KeepItOn Campaign Lead.

What you will do

  • Identify, monitor, verify, and document internet shutdowns using Access Now’s Shutdowns Tracker Optimization Project (STOP) methodology
    • Map relevant sources of data, including Google (via its transparency data), Facebook (via its internet disruption data), IODA, OONI, Cloudflare, Censored Planet and more – and incorporate such sources of data into our data collection mechanism
    • Regularly check with partners, and collaborate with existing sources of data to document internet shutdowns and social media blocking
  • Lead on auditing, updating, and streamlining #KeepItOn STOP data and methodology
    • Streamline the STOP data input process to regularly integrate and contextualize data from the measurement community and other relevant sources and keep it up to date
    • Coordinate and support ongoing discussion with regards to the revision and improvement of the working definition of internet shutdowns and catalog technical means of shutdowns
    • Update the methodology for the STOP database entry in line with the new community internet shutdown definition and taxonomy
    • Update existing data to align with the new methodology and data collection mechanism
  • Identify, monitor, and report on ongoing trends and insights around the use of shutdowns including through data visualization methods
    • Contribute to quarterly and annual #KeepItOn reports looking at trends and developments of shutdowns globally
    • Periodically produce articles or analysis of key findings or trends of internet

Skills, education, and mindset you will bring

  • Exceptional data analysis and reporting skills
  • A working knowledge of network measurement tools and data management systems
  • Strong general understanding of user safety, data ethics, and research practices
  • Confidence and clarity in project management and internal communication
  • Fluency in English
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, respond quickly to breaking news items, and effectively balance competing priorities
  • Ability to be effective while working remotely and while collaborating with a diverse global team
  • Familiarity with office productivity suites
  • Knowledge of digital rights or policy issues surrounding human rights and technology is helpful
  • Interest in the mission of Access Now

The Details

This is a full-time position, ideally aligned with our established Team Member presences in Berlin, Brussels, Manila, Nairobi, New York City, San José (CR), Singapore, Toronto, Tunis, or Washington, DC. At this time most Access Now Team Members are working through hybrid office arrangements, combining remote at-home work with intermittent use of offices and/or co-working spaces. The successful candidate must possess the right to work in the location in which they will be based. We are unable to sponsor visas or relocations for this role.

Remuneration

Access Now offers competitive compensation in line with depth of preparation, skills and experience – and offers broad benefits packages aligned with our regions and office localities. The following are illustrative examples of anticipated initial placement within salary ranges, if filled within general regions:

  • Asia: between ₱230,000 and 255,000 PHP, gross monthly
  • Europe: between €3,900 and 4,400 EUR, gross monthly
  • MENA: between د.ت13,000 and 15,000 TND, gross monthly
  • United States: between $4,500 and 5,000 USD, gross monthly
