Full-Time Juvenile Court Improvement Coordinator

OVERVIEW

The Juvenile Court Improvement Coordinator will improve the practices, policies and coordination of services available to the youth and families with dual system involvement (Child Welfare and Delinquency). The position seeks to improve outcomes for crossover children and families. This position will serve as a cohesive centerpiece to help bridge systems and motivate change to better serve our youths and their families.

 

Primary responsibilities for the Juvenile Court Improvement Coordinator are:

 

  • Provision of Oversight to Special Projects and Initiatives of the Family Court and Juvenile Services Division:  
    • Staff and participate in multi-agency committees and initiatives related to improving outcomes for children and families in dependency and delinquency cases in partnership and consultation with the Lead Juvenile Court Judge and the DCJ Juvenile Division Director. Complete assigned tasks, provide expertise and training, and chair committees as needed.
    • Serve as a liaison and advocate for the Juvenile Justice System with the Behavioral, Mental Health, and Wraparound Service Systems to help make mental health needs of system involved youth a priority.
    • Collaborate and share information and resources for youth at risk of system involvement.
    • Promote policy as stated by the Juvenile Court, Court Administration, DCJ, and Juvenile Services Division.

 

  • Development of Programs and Initiatives for the Family Dependency Court and Juvenile Services Division:
    • Develop working knowledge of various administrative systems and policies of the Juvenile Court, the child welfare system, the juvenile justice system and other systems that intersect with Juvenile Court proceedings.
    • Develop tools, training, and educational materials related to Juvenile Court Initiatives and best practices in child welfare/juvenile justice.
    • Convene collaborative grant planning groups and write grant proposals that would further the goals of the Juvenile Court and the Juvenile Services Division.
    • Develop and implement initiatives to promote and support best practices around systemic issues
    • Develop educational tools and gather material on best practices to keep the Juvenile Court bench informed, as well as Juvenile Services Division employees and partners.
    • Driver of improvements in collaboration and coordination on crossover cases.
  • Provide Support to the Lead Juvenile Court Judge and Juvenile Services Division Director:
    • Foster communication and act as liaison between the Juvenile Court and system partners, such as DHS, Department of Community Justice, and other system providers
    • Continuing in the role as liaison between the Juvenile Justice System and the Youth Provider Network (a network of providers of substance use services to youths)
    • Helping to brainstorm solutions to youth access to and success in services, to barriers to information sharing and coordination, etc.
    • Support Juvenile Court Counselors in making timely referrals for treatment for youth and families
    • Serve as an advocate and liaison for the Juvenile Services Division for the development of a broader array of treatment and community based services for youths, including more culturally appropriate services and placements.

The Department of Community Justice (DCJ) is recognized as a national leader in both adult and juvenile community justice. DCJ routinely consults and makes use of evidence-based practices in our program and policy development. The Department’s commitment to data-informed decision-making has led DCJ to make smart investments of taxpayer dollars in supervision, sanctions, and services for the county’s highest risk and highest need justice-involved individuals. DCJ makes long-term investments in its employees through the provision of education and training. DCJ operates 24 hours a day, with nearly 600 permanent, on-call, and temporary employees. The Department supervises approximately 9,000 justice-involved individuals annually and those defendants requiring pretrial services. DCJ’s Juvenile Services Division operates the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Facility and is responsible for approximately 360 youth on formal and informal community supervision.

Type of Position: This hourly position is eligible for overtime.

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week
