Jury Attendant

Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience

Pay rate for this position is $18.00 per hour.

High School Diploma, G.E.D., or foreign education equivalent to a US Accredited High School Diploma and one (1) year of related experience in courts, legal office or working directly with the public.

Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

Nature of Work

Acts as a liaison between the judge and jurors during a jury trial. Is under general supervision of Court Administration staff. Jury Attendants are responsible for facilitating efficient courtroom proceedings. These positions are responsible for preparing and securing courtrooms and juries, assisting judges and attorneys and maintaining court exhibits. Confidentiality of court proceedings is an essential element.

Examples of Work

  • Maintains order in courtroom during trial and guards jury from outside contact.
  • Secures, sequesters and escorts jurors to the courtroom.
  • Acts as a liaison between judge, juries, attorneys and witnesses.
  • Conducts orientation for jurors.
  • Prepares the courtroom for jury trials and court proceedings.
  • Takes attendance for jurors reporting for duty and keeps jurors together during breaks.
  • Prepares jury and courtroom for deliberation.
  • Orders meals for deliberating jurors.
  • Provides jury escort to areas outside of courtroom to prevent jury contact with public.
  • Enforces courtroom rules of behavior and warns persons not to disturb court procedure.
  • Checks courtroom for cleanliness and assures availability of supplies.
  • Stops people from entering courtroom while judge charges jury.
  • Reports need for police of medical assistance to sheriff’s office.
  • Keeps jurors together in any evacuation circumstances that may arise (ex. storms, fire, bomb threats, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Some knowledge of the court system.
  • Some knowledge of the criminal justice system.
  • Skill in listening to what other people are saying and asking questions as appropriate.
  • Skill in identifying the nature of problems.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in recommending possible solutions for juror difficulties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, jurors, court staff, public officials and citizens of the community.
  • Ability to speak clearly so that is understandable to the listener.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • Ability to concentrate and not be distracted while performing a task over a period of time.
  • Ability to tell when something is wrong or likely to go wrong.
