Full-Time IT Director
Job Description
Position Summary: The IT Director analyzes, plans, designs, coordinates, directs, and reviews the information technology-related activities and operations of Groundswell’s IT Department. This position defines and implements IT policies and procedures in accordance with industry best practices. The position provides highly responsible and complex administrative, strategic and technical counsel to Groundswell Fund (501 c 3) and Groundswell Action Fund (501 c 4) and coordinates activities with other organizational departments and outside agencies. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general supervision of Co-Executive Director, Meenakshi Menon.
Responsibilities:
- Upon hire, conduct a complete audit of the organization’s IT needs, functions, and processes, including identifying vulnerabilities, upgrades, and opportunities for improvement.
- In partnership with the IT Manager, continue setting the tone and culture for the IT Department, prioritizing “leveling up” the IT function of our rapidly scaling organization with an emphasis on security, innovation, and building an Agile culture.
- Be the main liaison with Hippogriff, Groundswell’s computer technology protection services provider for risk management services and cyber security.
- Act as the third line of technical support for staff, after ATS and the IT Manager. Troubleshoot, diagnose problems, implement corrective action procedures and liaise with ATS.
- Partner with the IT Manager, Communications Director and key stakeholders across the organization to develop solutions for IT needs.
- Lead the planning, coordinating, communicating, and executing the release of desktop applications and system updates such as Slack, Zoom, Windows, SharePoint, and Google Drive.
- Recommend, develop and implement IT policy and best practice guides for Groundswell.
- Develop an effective and workable framework for managing and improving staff IT support at Groundswell.
- Develop IT policy and protocols.
- Coordinate with the Directors Team around crisis IT events.
- In partnership with the IT Manager, maintain essential IT operations, including operating systems, security tools, applications, cloud servers, email systems, laptops, tablets, software, and hardware.
- Monitor performance of information technology systems to determine cost and productivity levels and make recommendations for infrastructure improvements.
- Prepare financial budgets and present proposals for capital projects to senior staff.
- Hire and train additional IT staff.
Qualifications:
Experience and Education
- 10+ years of experience managing an IT department with a demonstrated track record of building and leading projects and teams.
- Thorough knowledge of managing a fully virtual organization across multiple time zones in a rapidly changing environment.
- Working knowledge and expertise with a variety of software, hardware, and applications including Microsoft based applications like SharePoint and M365, as well as GSuite, CRMs, and ERPs.
- Have a working knowledge of object-oriented programming and the integration of Full Technology Stack solutions.

This is a remote position and applicants must be able to work from home.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have an openness to learning and working with technology, including Microsoft Office 365 and suite of programs, Gsuite, Slack, Asana, Zoom, and PC computers.
Work Schedule: Groundswell is a completely virtual organization, allowing for flexibility in work schedules for our staff across differing U.S. time zones. While work can usually be completed during standard business hours of the applicant’s time zone, there may be times where early morning, evening, and weekend work may be needed to ensure organization-wide collaboration, to staff or attend events, and/or to meet organization workload needs during busy times of the year. When travel is possible again, staff whose jobs require travel can expect longer hours, as travel may happen outside of business hours and on weekends.
Travel: When travel is safe again, must be available to travel at least 10 times a year for overnight events/meetings/assessments across the U.S. Travel needs will be evaluated and determined on an ongoing basis with an eye toward staff safety as we continue navigating COVID-19.
Compensation/Benefits: Annual salary is $135,000 or commensurate with experience. Very generous benefits include fully paid for employee and family health, dental, vision, matching 401K plan, as well as additional employer-provided reimbursements for fertility expenses, transgender health care costs and midwifery/doula expenses that are not covered by insurance. Three weeks of vacation upon hire and a generous holiday schedule including a week during the summer and the last two weeks of December, as well as a flexible work schedule.
