SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The international student advisor supports academic achievement of international students and provides F1 immigration related advising and services. This position will provide direct advising services to students pursuing prerequisites and courses for college programs. This position assists the college with providing direct service to international students; academic advising and F1 immigration related counseling including admissions assistance. This position is responsible for supporting program enrollment growth goals set by the college and for participating in student success initiatives. This is an administrative position that reports to the Dean of International Programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Provide direct, comprehensive program advising for prospective and enrolled international students concerning professional-technical and academic courses, admission procedures, degree or certificate requirements, transfer information, and related college information. Evaluate transcripts for placement for credit transfer into appropriate degrees
• Monitor and manage students’ academic progress and completion from initial enrollment to graduation utilizing Hobson’s Starfish software and Radius by Campus Management.
• Assist students to develop degree plans, identify appropriate learning resources, and intervene when needed to help students having difficulty to facilitate student progression and completion
• Serve as student advocate to resolve matters of academic difficulty and college process navigation; help students to resolve misunderstandings
• Advise international students on immigration, academic and personal issues; provide and coordinate crisis intervention in case of illness or serious legal, financial, or personal problems.
• Serve as DSO (Designated School Official), manage SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) compliance for the Department of Homeland Security; provide thorough information on immigration regulations and procedures to advise international students effectively; interpret US immigration policy to the campus community; and work closely with colleagues to resolve complex, non-routine cases.
• Develop and conduct workshops, seminars, and outreach activities to assist students in developing educational and career goals.
• Develop programs and services to ensure academic success of international students, including orientation, educational planning, acculturation, peer counseling, and tutorial support; coordinate with faculty on support systems, learning styles of international students.
• Represent the college at professional and community organizations; participate in professional conferences and in-services
• Present individual and group orientation sessions; coordinate enrollment in degree or certificate programs and student progress with instruction and enrollment service staff.
• Facilitate re-entry and cultural re-adjustment related to the student’s return home or continued education in the U.S.
• Ensure areas of responsibility operate within the policies and procedures of the college and applicable governing agencies; recommend policies and procedures related to college assessment and student services.
• Assist supervisor with department planning of goals and objectives; plan, schedule, train, and direct work activities of employees of lower classifications as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience related to the above functions; Master’s degree preferred
• Experience in educational counseling, advising, international programs, or international student recruiting/admissions; experience in a higher education institution preferred; experience working in an International Student Services office in a college setting preferred.
• Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, plan, set priorities, work under pressure, and keep deadlines Understanding of needs of international students, and ability to establish effective working relationships
• Working knowledge of SEVIS reporting, student tracking, and database management for research and data analysis preferred.
• DSO/PDSO experience preferred.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs required.
• Ability to speak and write effectively in English; Knowledge of cross-cultural communications, work and/or living experience abroad, & foreign language skills are preferred
• Driver’s License and willingness to drive for events is required.

Compensation & Work Schedule Initial salary placement is $5,416 per month. This is a 40-hours per week, administrative position.
