Definition

Under direction, performs technical instructional support duties in a laboratory, learning center, or similar instructional setting by assisting students with academic work using an established framework of procedures and protocols; reinforces instruction and concepts presented by the instructor; assists staff and students in using equipment and facilities; prepares, sets up and/or works with students on lesson-based activities as directed by instructor; assists students and/or instructors in using various technologies; proctors examinations; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervision

Work under the direct supervision of the department manager. May receive work direction from, but is not directly or indirectly supervised by, an instructor or division/department chair.

Does not directly or indirectly supervise other employees but may provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers.

Work Schedule:

This is a substitute, temporary position. Up to 40 hours per week, as needed.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs technical instructional support duties in a laboratory, learning center, or similar instructional setting by assisting students with academic work using an established framework of procedures and protocols.

• Reinforces instruction, terminology, concepts, principles, and techniques presented by the instructor; explains assignments to one or more students and guides them in the use of equipment and materials to perform class activities.

• Assists instructors and students in using equipment and facilities; schedules laboratory and/or equipment usage for instructors and/or individual students; checks equipment in and out.

• Tracks student participation and attendance and informs instructors of noted issues or problems.

• Prepares and sets up equipment and materials and/or works with students on scheduled exercises, demonstrations, and classroom assignments as directed by instructor; demonstrates the proper and safe use of equipment and materials; properly cleans and stores equipment and supplies after use; monitors inventories and submits requests to management for the purchase of needed items.

• Assists students and/or instructors in using various technologies, including instructional equipment, learning management system, student account, and internal communication platforms; sets up and configures software applications to meet specific student or class needs; provides assistance on standard business applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, email, and internet tools; may provide routine assistance with specialized applications used in the assigned department.

• May performs routine hardware and software maintenance, installations, and/or updates; troubleshoots and resolves minor equipment problems and notifies appropriate staff of needed repairs or replacement.

• Proctors and scores tests based on specific criteria provided by the course instructor using testing software and equipment.

• Maintains accurate and organized electronic and hard copy records and files pertaining to student participation, performance, and progress in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations.

• May assist with compiling and reporting data; may recommend changes to laboratory policies and procedures.

• May provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The education, training, and experience qualifications are considered likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the above essential duties. 

Education and Experience

Associate’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.

Two (2) years of instructional assistance experience.

Licenses/Certifications/Other Requirements

• Depending on the assignment, experience and or college-level coursework related to the assigned department or program may be required.

Knowledge of:

• Academic subject in area of assignment.

• Technologies and equipment applicable to the academic subject.

• General laboratory/classroom procedures and rules of conduct including safety procedures applicable to the areas of assignment.

• Laws, regulations, standards, and requirements applicable to areas of assignment.

• Technical methods of data research, collection, compilation, organization, and reporting.

• Methods of prioritizing, planning, and organizing work.

• Standard formats for business correspondence and other communications.

• Standard office practices or procedures.

• Standard office software and modern office equipment.

• Methods of filing information using alpha, numeric and alphanumeric systems.

• Correct use of the English language, including spelling, punctuation, grammar, and composition.

• Principles and practices of customer service.

• Business arithmetic.

Ability to:

• Explain and apply general laboratory/classroom procedures including safety procedures applicable to the areas of assignment.

• Assist students with instructional terminology, concepts, principles, and techniques.

• Set up and demonstrate the proper utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies.

• Monitor student progress.

• Maintain supplies and facility.

• Understand, apply, and explain laws, regulations, policies, and other requirements applicable to the areas of assignment.

• Research, collect, organize, and report data.

• Operate a variety of office equipment including computers and printers/copiers.

• Utilize standard office software (e.g., email, word processing, and spreadsheet software).

• Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information.

• Prepare reports, correspondence, and other documents using multiple business formats.

• Maintain hard copy and electronic files and records.

• Perform business arithmetic.

• Prioritize work and complete assignments accurately and within established deadlines.

• Provide and obtain detailed information to/from others.

• Provide customer service with a high level of sensitivity, tact and patience.

• Exercise reasonable judgment in performing job duties.

• Perform and prioritize multiple tasks.

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work. Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS

The following physical and mental standards are identified as necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities. However, reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position. 

Mobility: frequent sitting for long periods; occasional kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, walking, and standing; occasional reaching above and below desk level.

Dexterity: frequent fine manipulation sufficient to operate a computer keyboard; frequent grasping to handle individual papers, write and take notes, and feel individual objects.

Lifting: frequent lifting of papers, files, equipment, and material weighing up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.

Visual Requirements: frequent use of vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens and do close-up work.

Hearing/Talking:frequent hearing and speaking in person and on the telephone.

Emotional/Psychological Factors: frequent contact with others, including staff, faculty, students, and the public; frequent deadlines and time-limited assignments.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

• Work is typically performed in an instructional laboratory, computer laboratory, or similar student learning setting.
