Full-Time INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

**Anticipated Hiring Range:  $48,401- $59,446**

 

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT an operator position. This vacancy IS A MECHANIC POSITION which will have operator responsibilities on a fill-in basis only.

Currently, the Town’s North Cary Water Reclamation Facility (NCWRF) is recruiting individuals for the position of Mechanic/Operator I.  This position will be primarily focused on the maintenance and repair responsibilities within this classification but will be expected to be able to fill-in as an operator if needed. Therefore, this job post includes descriptions of the duties of both job classifications.

The Mechanic/Operator I performs technical and skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the water reclamation facility.   Employees primarily assigned to maintenance duties work a normal 10-hour shift with occasional call-back/stand-by duties for emergency maintenance and operational issues, while persons primarily in an operations capacity work 12-hour shifts.

Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor. WRF positions are part of our established career ladder program that provides for the advancement of staff members in eligible positions who demonstrate increasing levels of knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Depending upon the level of attainment in the career ladder, an employee may have lead worker duties over other plant personnel.

Water Reclamation Facility positions are “critical positions”, meaning you are required to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations, to maintain equipment and/or assist the Division in any capacity necessary to continue Town operations. Employees in this role must also live within fifty (50) miles of the facility and respond to the facility within one (1) hour when fulfilling call-back/stand-by duties.  The North Cary Water Reclamation Facility is located at 1900 Old Reedy Creek Road Cary, NC 27513.

 

Typical Tasks

 

TYPICAL TASKS IN THE ROLE OF MECHANIC:

Performs regular preventive maintenance such as greasing moving parts, changing oil, checking amperages, and overall visual inspections of equipment and related parts;

Participates in performing corrective maintenance procedures such as changing bearings in pumps and motors, changing ultraviolet lamps, repairing wiring and connectors, packing pumps, changing belts, replacing shear-pins, etc.;

Retrofits plant equipment, structures, plumbing and electrical systems;

Operates various landscaping equipment and performs landscaping and grounds maintenance duties;

Collects data for the preventative maintenance program and takes corrective action as required;

Troubleshoots electrical and mechanical problems; checks blueprints, electrical schematics, manuals, etc. to determine problems;

Maintains safe working environment;

Dismantles and overhauls various plant equipment such as grit collectors, pumps, submersible mixers, bar racks, blowers, electric actuators, gear boxes, valves;

 

Performs troubleshooting and maintenance on complex electrical and electronic systems;

Installs new equipment;

Provides assistance to higher level maintenance technicians;

Maintains detailed records on plant maintenance;

Performs skilled mechanical, pipe fitting, and electrical work in high stress, high danger situations;

Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Utilizes Office Suite software, attends meetings virtually, and communicates frequently through MS Teams and email.

 

TYPICAL TASKS IN THE ROLE OF RELIEF OPERATOR:

Makes regular tours of the facility monitoring mechanical and analytical equipment such as Pumps, Generators, Motors, Nutrient Analyzers, Blowers, Digesters, UV Disinfection, Chemical Feed Equipment, and Clarifiers;

 

Performs various laboratory tests

 

Maintains records and reports;

 

Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, and valves to meet changing operational conditions;

 

Monitors operation of the plant through the use of specialized computer equipment such as SCADA systems, controls and printers;

 

Maintains process analyzers, performs calibration and service as prescribed;

 

Monitors Chemical Feed Systems and makes adjustments as necessary;

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of an industrial facility. Familiarity with the maintenance of a grade IV water reclamation facility would be beneficial. Knowledge of electrical and electronic systems; knowledge of hydraulic, and mechanical principles pertinent to an industrial facility. Knowledge of biological principles of a wastewater treatment facility would be beneficial.   Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work related to an industrial facility and of necessary safety precautions. Ability to operate a computer relative to the operation of the plant and troubleshooting malfunctions; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to conduct routine laboratory tests; ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions; ability to accurately maintain records and official documents; ability to work in adverse conditions. Skill in the use and care of equipment and hand tools; ability to type and work with computers.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

 

Required:

-Graduation from high school or equivalent GED.

-Possession of a valid, appropriate driver’s license and a satisfactory motor vehicle record.

-Ability to type, comfortable with Microsoft applications.

-Ability to obtain a Grade I Biological Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification from the State of North Carolina within 1 year of hire date.

 

Preferred: Possession of a Biological Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification from the State of North Carolina.
