Full-Time HPC Engineer
Job Description
Working closely with members of the I.T. and Technical Services (ITS), and more widely with technical users across EMBL-EBI, the HPC Engineer will play an active part in the design, deployment and operation of the substantial HPC clusters and computational resources in place to support the processing of the large data flows fundamental to EMBL-EBI activities. Day to day the HPC Engineer will work with the HPC sub-team, members of the ITS and HPC users.
Your role
Working as part of the HPC team, under the direction of the HPC Lead the HPC Engineer will:
- Ensure the day-to-day operation, reliability, and integrity of EMBL-EBI’s HPC clusters and computational resources, including schedulers, software, hardware and networking
- Recommend, design and deploy future EMBL-EBI HPC clusters and infrastructure, including both logical configuration and physical racking and cabling
- Automate the setup and configuration of clusters, using tools such as Ansible
- Maintain and update reporting interfaces to deliver monitoring and accounting of the infrastructure
- Support users and investigate and resolve complex issues where in-depth evaluation of various technical and non-technical factors is required
- Build positive relationships, communicating openly and professionally within the team and with stakeholders from the ITS and wider EMBL-EBI community
- Produce high quality documentation to support work done, and work actively to share knowledge within the team

You have
- Degree in computer science or equivalent industry experience
- At least 5 years of experience with HPC cluster setup, configuration and maintenance
- Diplomatic approach to conflict resolution
- Resilience under pressure
- Experience in the deployment and tuning of cluster schedulers, ideally SLURM
- Solid experience in bare metal hardware deployment, ideally with major vendor hardware such as Dell, HP, Lenovo etc.
- Strong Linux administration skills, ideally with RHEL or a RHEL clone
- Solid skills in automation frameworks, including Ansible
- Solid skills in at least one programming language, ideally Python
- Experience in debugging complex issues caused by an interplay of user jobs, hardware or firmware
- Strong interpersonal and written English communication skills
- Proven ability to work well in a team, building positive relationships and sharing knowledge
- Experience in deployment of scientific softwares using Spack or Easybuild
- Experience with HPC Cluster management and provisioning tools e.g. Warewulf, OpenHPC
- Experience with cloud technologies, including GCP or AWS certification
- Experience with storage systems, and ideally parallel file systems such as Lustre, WekaFS and/or GPFS
- Experience with various network technologies, such as Ethernet and InfiniBand
- Experience with methodologies for infrastructure monitoring.
