Job Description

The City of Worcester seeks applicants for the position of Housing & Health Inspector (Sanitary Inspector) for the Department of Inspectional Services. Under the general supervision of a Chief Sanitary Inspector, this position performs sanitary inspections to ascertain compliance with applicable laws and regulations, investigates nuisances, substandard housing conditions, sources of filth, and causes of sickness to abate violations and correct unsanitary conditions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform sanitary inspections to ascertain compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Investigate nuisances, substandard housing conditions, sources of filth, and causes of sickness to abate violations and correct unsanitary conditions.
  • Perform sanitary inspections of private sewage disposal systems, municipal waste disposal, bath and recreation areas, and municipal water supplies.
  • Perform inspections to eliminate vermin and rodents, and to determine lead paint levels.
  • Enforce regulations.
  • Prepare reports and keep records of inspection.
  • Performs inspections of eating and drinking establishments to ascertain compliance with laws and regulations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to interpret and apply the laws, rules and regulations pertaining to sanitary inspection, including the sanitary code of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Articles I, II, IV and X, §§ 58 and 62 of Chapter III of the Massachusetts General Laws and Title V of the State Environmental Code, “Minimum Requirements for the Subsurface Disposal of Sanitary Sewage.”
  • Ability to interpret and apply City of Worcester General Revised Ordinances, City of Worcester Zoning Ordinance and applicable environmental or public health codes, such as DEP regulations, FDA food code, and the current Massachusetts merged Food Code
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of general report writing.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic computations.
  • Ability to check and verify information.
  • Ability to follow written instructions.
  • Ability to rely on and interpret laws, codes, regulations, and field experience
  • Ability to prepare general reports
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work independently.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Valid Driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.

Excellent communications skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Health related field
  • One (1) year of experience in a customer service setting
  • One (1) year of experience of performing inspections

SALARY RANGE: $24.29 – $31.49 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
