Full-Time Head of Business Development
Job Description
Lantern provides digital step-by-step guidance on navigating life before and after a death. Whether you’re pre-planning for yourself or managing the logistics for someone else, we’re here for you. Lantern is a venture-backed, series seed, Public Benefit Corporation.
About the Role
If you’re excited by the idea of building a sales team from the ground up, keep reading! We’re looking for a Head of Business Development to join our team as its first sales hire. In this role, you’ll get to shape our sales strategy and execute on that vision. Our ideal hire is someone who’s an experienced individual contributor and is looking to level up by taking on leadership roles and responsibilities at an early, venture-backed startup.
You will:
- Establish strategy and goals for enterprise sales
- Execute on strategy to reach sales targets as first sales hire
- Develop and maintain b2b customer relationships
- Collaborate with Product and Marketing to reach revenue and growth goals
- May include leading sales team planning and hiring in the future
The Nuts and Bolts
Every day you will:
- Partner with the CEO to define and achieve the company’s revenue and growth goals.
- Utilize industry trends and customer insights to grow revenue and establish Lantern as one of the first comprehensive end-of-life and death planning offerings on the market.
- Execute on strategy and close business as solo sales team member until future hires are made.
- Develop the Lantern sales playbook and lead a quarterly planning process. Collaborate with marketing and product leadership to position Lantern as the industry leader.
- Assist leadership in determining the best use of sales investment to ensure proper planning, management, controls and analysis to drive ROI.
- Build strong and long-lasting customer relationships.
You are:
- Someone with a consistent track record of exceeding revenue and lead goals exceeding $1-5M, with the ability to communicate which actions and decisions led to your success.
- Able to lead all aspects of sales strategy, including vision, prospecting, cold outreach, pipeline management, operating procedures, negotiations, contract execution, customer onboarding, account management and retention in the US market.
- Able to develop efficient systems and identify areas for process optimization.
- Great at talent management with an ability to attract, develop, and retain top performers.
- A strong collaborator at the leadership level, while also being comfortable doing the day to day legwork required to scale the organization. You’re a coach, but spend most of your time as a player.
You’ll Need:
- 5+ years of B2B sales experience, preferably with employer or customer benefits, at a startup through growth from 0 – 25 employees.
- Experience in scaling sales organizations and processes from scratch, with minimal guidance.
- Ability to implement rigor around measuring and reporting all sales efforts and partner success.
- Ability to identify talent and hiring needs, and recruit, build, and grow a high-performing team.
- Ability to influence and direct multiple initiatives, handle ambiguity, and succeed with minimal guidance.
Our Process
Our aim is to move through this process quickly; we’d love to have someone join the team in January 2021. That said, making sure we’ve got the right fit is important to us. Here’s what you can expect:
- HR Phone Screen. You’ll have a quick phone call with our COO so we can learn more about your experience and why you want to work at Lantern.
- Phone Call with CEO. Liz is who you’ll be working most closely with — you two will connect over the phone to feel out alignment!
- Assessment. We’ll provide a short assessment where you can flaunt your strategic vision and pitching skills. This will be presented during stage 4.
- Face-to-Face. For safety, this will be a video interview: you’ll present your assignment to our CEO and we’ll connect you to one of our advisors or investors.
- Reference Checks. We’ll chat with a few folks to hear what it’s been like to work with you.

What Sets Us Apart
- We get to improve peoples’ lives. Lantern makes peoples’ toughest moments easier to wade through. You get to be a part of that.
- You’ll get equity. Not only will you get to help define how Lantern scales, but you’ll own some of it.
- We provide healthcare. We offer a benefits package that covers health, dental, vision, and life.
- Our WFH Policy is flexible. During non-pandemic times, working from the office is our standard (we want to see you!), but we get that some days you’re more productive from home or you just need to catch up on laundry while you work.
- You can take the time off you need. We have unlimited vacation. Sometimes that means that people don’t take what they need, so we have a minimum requirement of taking 8 days per year. We observe 9 holidays (plus the week between Christmas and New Years) and you get your Birthday off!
- Take 10 sick + personal days
- For parental leave, we offer 3 months for birthing parents and 6 weeks for non-birthing parents.
- We provide up to three weeks of paid leave for employees dealing with the death of an immediate family member (as defined by the employee) and one week of leave for an extended family member. With unlimited vacation and the ability to work from home, we’ll work with you to make sure you’re getting the time and flexibility you need.
- We have an incredible team. We’re motivated, collaborative, scrappy, and love to celebrate wins. We can’t wait for you to join us!
Our Commitment to Inclusion
At Lantern, our commitment to inclusion across race, gender, age, religion, identity, and experience drives the teams that we build, the leaders we cultivate, and the users that we serve. We exist to answer a human need and we want that reflected inside of our walls.
We’re creating a culture where not only does everyone have a seat at the table, but where their work is valued, their voice is heard, and their path to success is transparent and attainable.
A Note About The Pandemic
We know this isn’t an ideal time for most people and you’re probably dealing with way more stress than you normally would be. Please know:
- If you need to reschedule our interview last-minute, that’s okay.
- If you can’t be on video the whole time, that’s okay.
- If there’s an unexpected interruption on our call, that’s okay.
None of this will in any way impact your candidacy with us.
