The Challenge
NCDOT’s HBCU/MSI Summer Internship Program delivers an immersive 8-week experience open to students attending a historically black college/university (HBCU)/minority-serving college/university (MSI) in North Carolina, or a North Carolina student attending an out-of-state HBCU/MSI.
You select 2 projects of interest when applying and gain hand’s-on experience working with our teams in meaningful work. Immerse yourself in public sector work that matters – visit our ferry ports, learn from our dynamic service teams, explore possible career paths, and collaborate with peers helping us address critical business initiatives that improve North Carolina.
Internships are available across North Carolina. You will receive a warm welcome, formal orientation, attend professional development meetings, and have informal sessions with mentors & senior leaders.
You will also complete a final internship presentation on your project(s) to share your contributions, insights, and key learnings.

Opportunities are available in Raleigh (14), Rocky Mount (4), Charlotte, Durham, Wilson, Clinton, Wilmington, Smithfield, Manns Harbor, Nashville, Albemarle, Shelby, Greensboro, Halifax, Asheville, & Fayetteville.
What You Bring
- An interest in public service/transportation in areas such as engineering, business, civil rights, drones, planning, accounting, public service, climate resiliency, or more.
- You are currently a student at a North Carolina HBCU/MSI and are enrolled in a bachelors, masters or professional level program, or you are an NC resident attending an HBCU/MSI outside of North Carolina.
- GPA of 2.8+ (on a 4.0 scale).
- A non-official transcript to upload when applying.
- One letter of recommendation from a non-family member uploaded to https://forms.office.com/g/fGwX16QbkW
- Good verbal and written communications skills.
- A positive attitude and collaborative team spirit.
