UKCEH is looking for an experienced Greenhouse Gas Field Technician to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.
Working at UKCEH is rewarding. Our science makes a real difference, enabling people and the environment to prosper, and enriching society. We are the custodians of a wealth of environmental data, collected by UKCEH and its predecessors over the course of more than 60 years.
As a valued member of our team, you’ll get:
- 27 days annual leave, rising to 29 days after five years, plus 3 days for our Christmas closure
- 10% employer pension contribution
- Enhanced maternity and paternity leave (subject to qualifying requirements)
- 24 hour, 365-day access to support with physical, mental, social, health or financial issues plus access to our trained Welfare Officers
- Flexible working opportunities
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Wetlands, Grasslands and Croplands team, based in Bangor, North Wales at the edge of the beautiful Snowdonia National Park. You will be working on land-based solutions required to meet net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Working on a wide range of natural, semi-natural and managed peatland ecosystems, as well as land-based methods for greenhouse gas removal from the atmosphere.
Responsibilities include field data collection activities across our network, to monitor greenhouse gas emissions and peatland subsidence from paludiculture sites across the UK (and potentially overseas in Europe, SE Asia and South America). Using state-of-the-art chamber methods and low-cost environmental sensors to conduct detailed greenhouse gas emission surveys, water balance and peat motion.
Additionally, your work will contribute to high-impact data collection, management, analysis and publication. Helping to support UK government policy and national emissions inventory reporting. Together with engaging with stakeholders from a wide range of organisations.
Explore the science further:
New skills and experience to be gained in this role could include:
- Working with environmental measurements of greenhouse gases, vegetation, and biodiversity
- Coordinating site access, data collection and data management within a large, multi-partner research project
- Data analysis and scientific publishing, through collaboration with other environmental scientists
You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Conducting regular fieldwork to collect new data on greenhouse gas emissions, meteorological conditions, soils and peat motion
- Taking responsibility for regular maintenance and troubleshooting of greenhouse gas flux equipment (e.g., analysers and automated chambers), and low-cost sensor equipment
- Being the point of contact for farmers and other landowners across the UK. Liaising on the planning of fieldwork activities
- Creating a database of new field data
- Preparing datasets for use in scientific data analysis, and contributing to the analysis and publication of data papers
- Conducting laboratory work (e.g., determination of bulk density, drying of plant material, loss on ignition, etc.)
For the role of Greenhouse Gas Field Technician, we’re looking for somebody who has:
- A degree in a relevant subject (e.g., Environmental Science, Physical Science, Engineering, Forestry) or equivalent work experience
- A full UK (manual) driving licence and willingness to travel to remote field sites all year-round
- Excellent organisational and time management skills, with an ability to work independently, to deadlines, and maintaining a fully documented and reproducible workflow
- The ability to plan, coordinate, deliver, and lead fieldwork activities
- Good team working skills, with the ability to develop effective working relationships
- Good written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences, including non-scientific, with a collaborative and inclusive approach
- Experience working in remote, outdoor environments
- Enthusiasm, drive and passion for environmental science
Desirable Skills:
- Knowledge of ecosystems; specifically, peatlands, farming practices and/or nature-based solutions
- Data analysis capability or willingness to develop these skills
- Data wrangling and analysis skills in R or similar
- Experience of working with scientific equipment in the field, such as greenhouse gas analysers and chambers (e.g., Eosense automated chambers, Li-COR, Los Gatos, EGM-4 or similar gas analysers), soil sampling equipment (e.g., Dutch and peat auger), environmental sensors, data loggers or similar
- Experience calculating GHG fluxes from chamber data
- Management and curation of scientific datasets
- Openness to be considered to support our scientific research in Europe and SE Asia (2-4 weeks at a time)
