Job Description
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds which may include and are not limited to Black, Indigenous, People of Color, including underrepresented groups and new immigrant populations, people with both visible and invisible disabilities, Women, people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions, First-generation students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and individuals who might encounter barriers based on their religious expression, age, national origin, ethnicity, or veteran status.
- Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Communications, Journalism or Art plus two years professional experience in graphic design, or six years combined equivalent education and experience.
- Demonstrated history of strong organizational and project management skills.
- Proficient with modern digital photography equipment.
- Expert in Adobe Suite (Photoshop Illustrator & InDesign)
- Documented experience as a professional photography and/or video
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in informal and formal teaming arrangements with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
- Eye catching portfolio.
- Have fun.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven understanding of the use of colors, inks and paper qualities.
- A thought leader with creative vision.
- Strong eye for aesthetic details, visual consistency and image selection.
- Shooting, coordinating, and off-camera lighting skills.
- Understanding of design patterns and layout considerations for digital tactics (email, web).
- Strong communication, writing, and verbal skills for a diverse and varied audience and clarity for meeting department objectives.
- At least six years working in a fast-paced environment with Adobe Creative Suite (Lightroom, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and After Effects) using a Macintosh platform.
- At least two years interacting with clients and vendors for print production designed to meet departmental objectives.
- At least three years working with electronic media design as a member of a team creating web design or mobile design to be moved into an electronic environment.
- Supervisory experience.

General Statement of Responsibilities:
The Graphic Designer / Photographer has an important role in supporting Boynton’s mission to foster a healthy campus environment, including a commitment to promoting messages that respect and advance diversity and inclusion.
This position will report to the Director of Communications and Marketing and is part of a marketing team that includes a Creative Multimedia Manager, Communications Associate, and student staff. You will work as part of a team and also independently, steering projects from conception to completion. You are also able to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, in the areas of graphic design and photography.
Median Salary: $59,800.00
Graphic Design – 60%
- Develops concepts and designs as directed in the Marketing and Communications Brand Guide. Combines messaging with graphic design to create fresh solutions for Boynton Health’s brand marketing communications needs.
- Presents design concepts and strategic rationale in collaboration with the communications and multimedia team to all stakeholders.
- Develops creative solutions for clinics, pharmacy and health promotion programs including integrated digital campaigns, social, digital display ads, web assets, animated web graphics, video, web page design, and print advertising.
- Delivers graphic design solutions for print, web, and social media that are fresh, accurate, and relevant to the target audience and on deadline.
- Works with the Creative Multimedia Manager and Communications Specialist to define overall communication strategies and specific tactics (elements).
- Provides concepts and layouts to the Creative Multimedia Manager and Director of Marketing & Communications to be presented for client approval, on time and within specifications.
- Sketches, design, graphic and create content, illustrations, infographics and photo manipulation.
- Helps develop, and use templates, standards and Brand Guidelines and Design Voice & Tone Strategy.
- Oversees all design elements, from the conception to final delivery.
- Maintains processes and digital asset repositories, including labeling and organizing.
- Follows project management process and utilizes designated platforms.
- Takes initiative to manage own project priorities and deadlines.
- Takes initiative to create mock-ups and test graphics that resonate with our target audiences.
- Provides art direction to Boynton and outside creative resources for projects: photographers, videographers, illustrators, and UMN partners.
Photography – 30%
- Participates in the development, creative direction, and execution of the brand style for Boynton Health’s array of still image platforms.
- Curates photoshoots for use in design which appeals to social media, print, digital and web design audiences.
- Is a thought leader with Boynton Health’s creative vision, and champions that vision throughout the organization.
- Takes direction from the creative multimedia manager and director of marketing & communications, but also have an independent creative point of view.
- Collaborates with the multimedia team and marketing teams to creatively tell our story and represent our brand.
Social Media – 5%
- Assists in creating social media posts as needed across channels.
- Good knowledge of social media channels, including legal concerns, best practices, and general usage.
Event and Program Support – 5%
- Attends events and programs to capture photos and generate ideas.
- Assists with tabling, setup and breakdown.
- Other duties as assigned.
Visual Brand Responsibilities:
- Responsible for ensuring Boynton’s style guide remains up to date and supports overall mission and values of the organization, including visuals that reflect a positive and inclusive campus climate for all by advancing equity and diversity.
- Ensures all print, digital and embroidered marketing materials meet Boynton and University of Minnesota brand guidelines.
- Ensure brand consistency throughout various marketing projects.
- Oversees the work of student designers and external designers, ensuring adherence of style guidelines. Trains students in what’s expected in design.
- With the Creative Multimedia Manager, establish guidelines for photography, including examples and descriptions of what photos for Boynton should convey and how that supports Boynton’s overall mission and strategies.
Creative Projects:
- Oversee Boynton Health campaigns.
- Brainstorming and art direction.
- Develop concepts, graphics and layouts for product illustrations, Boynton Health logos and webpages.
- Curate photoshoots that will appeal to social media, print, digital and web design.
- Photo manipulation and editing
- Oversee & improve consistency of the brand across all customer touch points i.e. flyers, digital, posters
- Consults with internal clients at Boynton Health to determine the graphic design needs and medium for the communications projects. Makes recommendations for the use of graphic design for printed and digital formats.
- Provide marketing team and clients with timeline estimates, concept options, cost estimates and resources needed to meet the needs and goals of the client and the marketing team.
- Provides all artwork for a range of projects that include brochures, insurance materials, health promotion campaigns, marketing campaigns as well as artwork for digital materials and templates including web, email and social media.
- Oversee project management of all graphic design components for Boynton materials, campaigns and initiatives. This includes coordinating and communicating with other members of the marketing team and with internal clients.
- Acts as administrator for design programs, including Adobe Cloud or other programs as needed. Oversees access to design programs, applications and equipment (i.e. computers, monitors) as needed by the team, including for student design and social media workers, and serves as liaison with the Office of Information Technology for software and hardware support.
