POSITION: Graphic Designer
REPORTS TO: Creative Director
CLASSIFICATION: Annual part-time, non-exempt. 20-hours per week.
COMPENSATION: $35 per hour.
Position Summary
Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Berkeley Rep) has grown from a storefront stage to an international leader in innovative theatre. Known for its ambition, relevance, and excellence, as well as its adventurous audience, the nonprofit has provided a welcoming home for emerging and established artists since 1968. Over 6 million people have enjoyed more than 500 shows at Berkeley Rep, including 85 world premieres. Berkeley Rep shows have gone on to win 8 Tony Awards, 9 Obie Awards, 11 Drama Desk Awards, 1 Grammy Award, 1 Pulitzer Prize, and many other honors. In recognition of its place on the national stage, Berkeley Rep received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1997. Through its annual seven-play season, together with up to four special event presentations, Berkeley Rep invites audiences to enjoy an eclectic range of theatrical experiences featuring diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.
Berkeley Rep seeks a highly motivated, collaborative, and curious part-time graphic designer. Reporting to the creative director, the graphic designer provides general design and production support in all areas, including advertising, print collateral, social media, in-house displays, and patron communications. This position lives in the marketing department and provides mentorship and professional development opportunities for individuals committed to a career in design.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The graphic designer will:
- Adhere faithfully and consistently to Berkeley Rep’s brand guidelines (typography, brand colors, logo usage, etc.) in the creation of all pieces.
- Ensure data and files are organized, stored, and backed up appropriately.
- Track and traffic graphics with third-party vendors including printers and advertisers. Learn and adhere to various union guidelines when managing photo and video assets.
- Create and revise print collateral as needed in different formats based on provided specifications.
- Pick up and deliver print orders, as needed.
- Create digital and print ads in multiple sizes and formats based on existing templates.
- Support the creation of public- patron-, and staff- facing content.
- Actively participate in workshops, trainings, and company meetings, including harassment prevention, bystander intervention, and other antiracism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access initiatives.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- 1–2 years’ professional experience in graphic or visual design.
- Strong grasp of the essential tenets of good typography, hierarchy/contrast, composition/grid, and colorwork.
- Strong skills in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, as well as Canva on Mac OS.
- Eagerness to learn all of the above.
- Keen eye for detail when it comes to type, grid, and copy.
- Ability to work harmoniously with big personalities and multiple concurrent projects.
- Exceptionally strong multi-tasking skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high degree of emotional intelligence and cultural competency.
- Interest in and commitment to antiracism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access.
- An appreciation for the arts, particularly the performing arts.
