About this role

The Grants & Contracts Associate plays an important role with the finance and development teams of our growing, global organization. The Associate collaborates across the Organization to ensure smooth and timely grant processing, grant reporting, accurate spending against grants budgets, and compliance with funder requirements and applicable laws. The Grants & Contracts Associate reports through the Grants and Contract Manager, and also supports the Director of Finance – Global. This position works across Access Now’s Development and Finance arms.

What you will do

The Grants & Contracts Associate assists with the day-to-day coordination of the Organization’s financial management of its grants, donations, and fundraising efforts in a dynamic, collaborative, and mission-based environment.

  • Perform financial grant analysis and grant compliance functions
  • Work closely with accountants to allocate expenses to specific grants and funders according to budget and need
  • Provide timely and accurate donor financial reports to Director of Finance and to Director of Development to meet rolling deadlines across all funding relationships
  • Review time allocation to grants to ensure that allocations meet funding requirements, and that grant funds are being spent down appropriately
  • Provide additional support to finance arm managers on audits and agreed-upon-procedures as needed, providing documentation and drafting responses to audit questions
  • Review incoming grant agreements for their financial requirements to provide advice on their application, feasibility, and practical implementation
  • Assist in ensuring that leaders and managers understand and comply with funders’ terms and conditions as set out in grant agreements
  • Maintain financial documents for funding agreements and strong internal processes which intersect with the Org’s Development team
  • Assist with analysis and reporting on general ledger account activity to identify budget variances
  • Provide support for periodic and annual restricted revenue release schedule
  • Support decision-making on grant expenses around whether expenses are appropriate and allowable within a grant framework, budget, goals, and general conditions
  • Work closely with European Union counterparts to align and ensure financial reporting and compliance obligations related to grant revenue and expenses
  • Lead administrative tasks across information management, maintenance of financial aspects of grant files, and document destruction
  • Pursue additional training in grant management requirements/regulations, as needed
  • Assist in global implementation of the annual RightsCon summit series
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills, education, and mindset you will bring

As a top candidate, you will bring basic financial management background, with international nonprofit grants experience. You are detail-oriented, good at managing priorities and deadlines, and have demonstrated success in coordinating across teams. Specifically, you will bring:

  • Detailed familiarity with principles of GAAP as they relate to grant-making and revenue recognition, as well as typical nonprofit policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Familiarity with grants from a diverse range of sources and various currencies in a nonprofit global context
  • Advanced Excel skills, including creation and use of complex pivot tables, Vlookup functions, and other features for formatting, manipulating, and analyzing data
  • Nonprofit accounting experience, including basic accounting concepts, TRNA (Temporary Restricted Net Assets) / funding with restrictions, deferred revenue, balance sheet items, projection, fund budget building
  • An adaptability, flexibility and creativity to get the job done
  • Ability to show initiative, set and manage priorities, manage horizontally/vertically and exercise sound judgment
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and multi‐task
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a fast-paced team
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills
  • A detail-oriented approach, possessing keen analytical skills organization
  • Appropriate education and work preparation for the role, with preference for a bachelor or master degree equivalent in accounting, finance, business management, or similar

Ideal to have:

  • Grant financial management and reporting experiences on various currencies
  • Revenue recognition per GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)
  • Familiarity with FundEZ and Salesforce

The Details

Location

This is a full-time position, with preference for placement aligned to either our New York City (Manhattan) or Washington, DC presences. We will consider applications from applicants aligned to our teams in Berlin, Brussels, San José (CR), Toronto, or Tunis. At this time most Access Now Team Members are working through hybrid office arrangements, combining remote at-home work with intermittent use of offices and/or co-working spaces. Applications will be accepted from other remote locations, on a case-by-case basis. Candidates must have the legal right-to-work in the location in which they will be based. We are unable to sponsor visas or relocations for this role.

Remuneration

Access Now offers competitive compensation and benefits packages that align competitively with locations and regions around the world. Location-specific examples of initial placement within the salary range for this role include:

  • €3,940 EUR gross monthly (Belgium)
  • $4,557 USD gross monthly (United States)
