Salary – £37,405 to £39,694
Hybrid working options
Fixed Term for 12-Months (maternity cover) and Full-Time (37 hours per week), ideally able to start in October/early November 2024

UKCEH is looking for an experienced GIS Spatial Modeller to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

You will be joining our team based in Bangor, North Wales at the edge of the beautiful Snowdonia National Park, as a Research Scientist where you’ll apply your skills in spatial data analysis to ecosystem services modelling, with a focus on people-environment interactions in urban settings.

 

You’ll be contributing to an exciting range of projects with global reach, taking responsibility for specific tasks, handling a range of spatial datatypes such as remotely sensed data, model outputs, field collated data, and working with the team to develop new data analysis and modelling approaches.

 

There will be opportunities to develop your research skills, learn new software, and contribute to/or lead on scientific papers.

 

Current projects the team is working on include: mapping urban green infrastructure; impact of green infrastructure on noise, heat, and surface water flooding; patch size and fragmentation on air quality; city explorer toolkit; and greenspace and wellbeing.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Processing of spatial data using GIS software (e.g., arcGIS, QGIS), or programming language of your choice (e.g., R, Python)
  • Analysing large datasets
  • Contributing to scientific outputs e.g., peer reviewed publications, customer reports, scientific models, data flows, and presentations
  • Leading or managing tasks within projects
  • Engaging with and developing good working relationships with stakeholders

 

For the role of GIS Spatial Modeller, we’re looking for somebody who has:

  • PhD in a relevant subject (e.g., Geography, Ecology, GIS) or equivalent relevant experience
  • Demonstrable experience with GIS
  • Demonstrable experience handing both raster and vector spatial datatypes
  • Excellent data management skills
  • Good time management skills (resources, time and the ability to work to project deadlines)
  • Experience in presenting activities and outcomes to a range of audiences, including non-specialists
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to develop good working relationships across a variety of teams and stakeholders, using a collaborative and inclusive approach

 

Desirable:

  • Experience of writing first author scientific papers
  • Experience of leading project tasks, understanding project management methods to meet deliverables
