Job Description

Salary – £36,245 to £38,463 Depending on experience (prorated for part-time hours)
Field and workshop based, with occasional opportunities to work from home
Permanent and Part-Time (18.5 hours per week)

UKCEH is looking for an experienced Greenhouse Gas Field Instrument, Flux & Hydrology Specialist to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

We have a unique opportunity to join our Bangor Wetlands, Grasslands and Croplands group.  You’ll have the variety of UK-based fieldwork, desk-based research and instrument development activities, with further opportunities to participate in international research, engaging with policymakers and decision-makers.

 

We have a growing portfolio of peatland research, you’ll help us deliver complex, multi-organisation projects, focusing on the management and restoration of peatlands across the UK, and internationally.

 

The science focuses on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and managing peatlands for carbon capture.  Studying their wider scientific importance for landscape, agriculture, biodiversity, water supply and flood regulation.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the operation of GHG flux measurement systems (flux towers, autochamber and manual chamber systems etc.)
  • Supporting our semi-natural and agricultural peatlands research sites and field experiments, including instrument support, data download and telemetry
  • Contributing to the development of autonomous, low-cost sensor systems, for monitoring of peatlands and other ecosystems
  • Processing of eddy covariance and autochamber data, gap-filling, data analysis and interpretation
  • Contributing to and subsequent leadership of scientific publications, and the development of new research activities
  • Potentially gaining skills in other areas e.g., process modelling, emissions inventory reporting, analysis of remote sensing data, use of autonomous sensor systems

 

For the role of GHG Field Instrument, Flux & Hydrology Specialist, we’re looking for somebody who has:

  • A PhD in environmental science or relevant science discipline
  • A full (manual) UK driving licence – please confirm in your application
  • Knowledge of carbon cycling and GHG fluxes in land or water
  • An ability to use sensor-based environmental monitoring
  • A practical understanding of Greenhouse Gas flux measurements
  • Experience in the deployment, use, and maintenance of electrical instrumentation and the design of low-cost, open-source instrumentation and micro-processor programming
  • Experience of remote sensing products and their research integration of in-situ sensors and ground data
  • An ability to undertake independent field-based research
  • A track record of published research and ideas
  • A high level of numeracy and ability to work with large datasets
  • A collaborative and inclusive team member, able to build relationships across of range of stakeholders
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • A willingness to travel for work, including some overnights stays

 

Desirable skills:-

  • Operating eddy covariance flux systems
  • Licensed drone pilot
  • Programming skills in a high-level language, such as R or Python
  • Skills in near, real-time data processing and high-performance computing
  • Earth Observation or process modelling
