Full-Time Geotechnical Operations Engineer
Job Description
- Perform site visits and attend project meetings.
- Monitor specialized geotechnical instrumentation (piezometers, seismographs, inclinometers, etc.).
- Oversee geotechnical construction methods and testing (pile driving, dynamic pile testing, cross hole sonic logging, static load testing, drilled pier construction, etc.).
- Review contractor submittals (drilled pier construction, hammer driving systems, temporary shoring/walls, permanent walls, dynamic pile test reports, CSL reports, static load test reports, etc.).
- Review plans and subsurface profiles.
- Review consultant submittals.
- Develop spreadsheets and checklists to perform submittal reviews.
- Develop drive criteria for piles.
- Develop special provisions and specialized plan sheets.
- Perform engineering analysis and run software related to axial pile capacity, lateral pile capacity, drive criteria, external stability, slope stability, settlement, etc.
- Provide recommendations/guidance on the geotechnical aspects of design, construction, and maintenance.
- Provide timely response to internal/external client requests in Construction and Maintenance.
- Communicate professionally with other NCDOT staff, contractors, and the public.
- Assist with ongoing research initiatives.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil and Geotechnical Engineering.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and evaluate soil and rock properties from subsurface reports, lab data, and other sources, including the ability to independently determine relevant criteria and use it in analysis.
- Experience in design and preparation of plans for roadway embankments, cut slopes, retaining walls, sound barrier walls, and bridge foundations.
- Computer skills using MicroStation and other programs for pile capacity and driving, soil-pier interaction, slope stability, soil nail walls, MSE walls, and shoring design.
- Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret, and clearly and effectively explain to audiences construction plans, provisions, specifications, policies, procedures, regulations, and relevant legislation.
- Bachelors degree in engineering, and
- 3+ years experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
