Full-Time Geotechnical Engineer – Entry Level!
Job Description
- Perform site visits and attend project meetings.
- Assist in monitoring specialized geotechnical instrumentation (piezometers, seismographs, inclinometers, etc.).
- Help oversee geotechnical construction methods and testing (pile driving, dynamic pile testing, cross hole sonic logging, static load testing, drilled pier construction, etc.).
- Help with the review of contractor submittals (drilled pier construction, hammer driving systems, temporary shoring/walls, permanent walls, dynamic pile test reports, CSL reports, static load test reports, etc.).
- Review plans and subsurface profiles.
- Develop spreadsheets and checklists to perform submittal reviews.
- Develop drive criteria for piles.
- Assist in developing special provisions and specialized plan sheets.
- Perform engineering analysis and run software related to axial pile capacity, lateral pile capacity, drive criteria, external stability, slope stability, settlement, etc.
- Make recommendations and provide guidance related to geotechnical aspects of design, construction, and maintenance.
- Provide timely response to internal/external client requests in construction and maintenance.
- Communicate professionally with other NCDOT staff, contractors, and the public.
- Assist with ongoing research initiatives.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology relating to highway design, construction, and maintenance to solve problems related to foundations, vibration, embankments, slope stability, walls, roadway subgrades, soft soils, and settlement.
- Knowledge regarding the analysis/interpretation of dynamic pile testing data/reports and/or developing drive criteria using wave equation analysis software.
- Knowledge of the analysis/interpretation of cross hole sonic logging data/reports.
- Knowledge regarding the analysis/review of contractor submittals related to MSE walls, soil nail walls, soldier pile walls, culvert headwalls, overhead and cantilevered sign foundations, sound wall foundations, temporary shoring/walls, hammer driving systems, and drilled pier installations.
- Bachelors degree in engineering; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Candidates with a Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Overnight travel may be required.
