The Challenge
We are looking for an entry level engineer to join our Western Regional Design Geotechnical Engineering team that delivers geologic, geotechnical, and geoenvironmental engineering services for planning, design, construction, and maintenance of NC highways.
In this role, you will:
    • Gain experience and knowledge on transportation infrastructure projects found only with NCDOT.
    • Make a positive impact on by helping make North Carolina’s infrastructure more resilient and sustainable.
    • Increase your skills by working with experts and consultants in the field.
    • Provide geotechnical design services for all projects across NCDOT Divisions 9 to 14.
    • Create designs in roadway foundations, bridge foundations, retaining walls, and other geotechnical areas.
    • Work closely with NCDOT business leaders, especially Roadway Design, Structure Management, Hydraulics, Traffic Control, and Project Development and Environmental Analysis.
    • Develop requests for proposals and cost estimates for consultant projects.
    • Supervise field work of consultant staff.
    • Review consultant subsurface inventory and geotechnical recommendations reports.
    • Plan and schedule detailed subsurface investigations and design work to assure quality products are delivered to the requested customers in a timely manner.
    • Review design recommendations reports prepared by in-house staff or consultants to assure that final products are correct and comply with NCDOT policies, manuals, and standard practices.
What You Bring
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil and Geotechnical Engineering.
    • Experience performing mathematically correct engineering design and analysis.
    • Experience communicating technical information clearly and effectively to various audiences.
 
Education & Experience
    • Bachelors degree in engineering; or
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Note
    • We may require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

We collect and analyze subsurface information and provide geotechnical engineering designs and recommendations for roadway slopes, embankments, and subgrades, and foundations of roadways and structures to ensure stability and cost-effective construction.
We assist in the construction and maintenance of roadways and structures, investigate, and develop remediation plans for geotechnical/geoenvironmental problems.
We investigate known and potentially contaminated properties to identify hazardous materials and provide removal instructions.
We review geotechnical designs and construction submittals from private engineering firms and contractors and evaluates new products.
