Full-Time Geopavement Engineer
Job Description
- Design, plan, and schedule detailed subgrade/subsurface geopavement investigations.
- Supervise and monitor field crews consisting of junior engineers, geologists, and technicians.
- Maintain field notes and records relating to pavement cores and borings during the investigations.
- Maintain accurate, concise field records of boring depths, pavement, aggregate and soil thicknesses, condition, composition and classification, moisture, density, and color.
- Prepare field diagrams and maps of subsurface and drainage features and interpret soil sampling needs.
- Produce written and graphic inventories of pavement and subgrade subsurface conditions to formulate recommendations for planning, design, construction, and maintenance of multiple types of transportation facilities.
- Locate and use prior investigations, technical reports, and papers.
- Interpret geotechnical data for use in projects.
- Prepare requests for proposals and cost estimates for consultant projects.
- Use your expertise performing geopavement design and periodically monitor chemical soil stabilization construction projects.
- Solve soil stabilization or subgrade problems occurring during construction.
- Conduct geopavement training courses and workshops provided to NCDOT & contractor construction staff in new construction methods and current soil stabilization specifications.
- Travel to project sites.
- Knowledge of geotechnical engineering, NC geography, and groundwater effects relating to roadway design and construction techniques.
- Experience planning and organizing pavement and subgrade subsurface investigations, including working with a drill crew, maintaining field notes, and preparing technical reports.
- Experience interpreting and explaining construction plans, provisions, specifications, policies, and procedures to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, agencies, and contractors.
- Experience communicating work to be performed to utility locating services, property owners, and contractors.
- Experience interpreting and evaluating material test data such as CBR, soil moisture/density relation, physiochemical changes with the addition of stabilizing agents, soil quality and properties, bearing capacity, and other related tests.
- Frequent overnight travel may be required depending on the project location.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Bachelors Degree in engineering, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
