The Challenge
We are hiring an experienced Geomaterials Specialist to join our Materials & Testing team.
In this role, you will work on projects across North Carolina and:
    • Serve as one of our Materials and Tests Unit’s 7 Geomaterials Field Specialists (GFS).
    • Help our Geomaterials Field Supervisor with the logistics of scheduling and presenting Materials and Testing training classes.
    • Perform internal audits and standardized testing equipment inventories.
    • Provide specialized training to state staff and contractors to enhance development, efficiency, and consistency in geomaterials testing for highway construction.
    • Ensure authorized users meet rules and regulations in the Radioactive Materials Licensure program, that includes controlling use and transportation of portable nuclear density gauges.
    • Investigate materials-related unsatisfactory test results and disputed assessments.
    • Help respond to project audits by the NC Office of the State Auditor.
    • Assist with research to evaluate new products and methods.
What You Bring
    • Demonstrated ability to convey technical instruction concepts and instruction techniques to training staff, including analyzing staff competencies in using these techniques with students.
    • Demonstrated ability analyzing findings and using sound judgment when recommending corrective actions based on materials investigations, technician assessments, and project audits.
    • Demonstrated ability assessing proficiency of technicians to ensure compliance with testing and inspection methods in classroom and field inspection environments.
    • Excellent communications skills to communicate effectively with internal and external customers in the areas of inspection, sampling, testing, and certification.
    • Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and using databases.
    • Ability to safely navigate hazardous work situations at highway construction projects and material/product stockpiles while following in-house safety procedures.
Bonus Points!
We are very interested in candidates with:
    • knowledge, experience, and certification in sampling and testing asphalt, aggregate, concrete and soils materials used in highway construction.
    • HiCams database experience.
Education & Experience
    • Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or related discipline, and
    • 6+ years progressive technician experience; or
      
    • High School/GED Diploma, and
    • 8+ years progressive technician experience; or
      
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
