Full-Time Fundraising and Communications Manager
Job Description
Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR) is a 40-year-old, physician-led advocacy organization working to create a healthy, just, peaceful and sustainable world. We take on the gravest current threats to human health and survival – nuclear weapons, economic inequity, and a climate crisis driven by dependence on fossil fuels. Through its three issue-based programs, WPSR leverages the credible and trusted voice of healthcare professionals to educate the public, influence decision-makers, and promote public policies that support our mission — including local, state-level, and national action to address the climate crisis.
Together with WPSR’s Executive Director, the Fundraising & Communications Manager develops WPSR’s short- and long-range fundraising objectives and works with the Executive Director to produce and implement an annual development plan.
We’re seeking applicants who share the deep commitment of our organization and the passion of members to fight for health, equity, and peace. We look for smarts, superlative written and interpersonal communication skills, an eagerness to learn, and a demonstrated record of success in nonprofit development, fundraising, and communications. The most promising candidates will be proven self-starters with excellent judgment, the ability to juggle multiple projects, and impeccable attention to detail. They will have experience developing and executing successful data-driven fundraising plans and campaigns, and will be able to see the big picture while managing the minute details.
The person in this position must demonstrate cultural competency and be committed to equity and social justice, treating everyone—donors, partners, volunteers, colleagues— with respect and dignity regardless of race, ethnic background, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background.
As the leader of our development efforts, the Fundraising & Communications Manager needs to be able to conceptualize, plan, and implement a programmatic approach to building relationships and securing philanthropic support — including setting ambitious goals, developing strategies for prospects, prioritizing activities, asking for gifts, and coordinating the involvement, as needed, of staff, board members and other volunteers.
WPSR’s annual operating budget is approximately $500,000, with 2/3 coming from individual donations and events, and the remainder from grants. This position is expected to raise approximately 3/4 of the annual budget, with anticipated annual increases of 15%. We see significant potential for success for the person in this role, as WPSR has yet to tap into the large population of prospective new members, or to convert existing members and subscribers into donors. There is also great promise in the growing number of institutional funders interested in our work.
