WHO WE ARE: FRESHFARM is a nonprofit that works to create a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable food future. FoodPrints is FRESHFARM’s food education program that aims to make positive changes in what children and their families eat by giving them hands-on experiences with growing, harvesting, cooking, and eating nutritious, fresh, local foods in season. We currently operate in 19 D.C. Public Elementary Schools, and have After School programs at 4 sites in Wards 4, 5 and 7. We are seeking teachers to join the FoodPrints After School team for the 2022-2023 school year, starting in Fall 2022.
WHO YOU ARE:
- A flexible team-player & clear communicator with strong organizational and problem solving skills
- Experienced with working with youth, ideally in an academic setting or doing outdoor, science, environmental, or place-based learning and a desire to learn and grow as an educator
- Proficient with cooking & gardening and passionate about sharing knowledge about fresh, local, nutritious, sustainable food with others
- Eager to join a dynamic team of educators who are dedicated to teaching children about growing, harvesting, cooking and eating healthy food
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Teaching
- Utilize the FoodPrints curriculum & program model to assist After School Lead Teachers
- Engage After School students by implementing games, movement activities, and other creative enrichment activities and support students’ social and emotional learning
- Assist with the preparation,set up,clean up from classroom & garden activities
- Support the management and maintenance of school gardens and teaching kitchen classrooms
- Engage in professional development opportunities to grow as a teacherPartner with and take direction from After School Lead Teachers and Instructional Support team to implement joyful and engaging FoodPrints experiences for students
Administrative Responsibilities
- Track attendance, collect data on student activities, & record observations in tracking system
- Attend bi-weekly FoodPrints team meetings & occasional training sessions

THE DETAILS:
- This is a part-time, non-exempt position. The assistant teacher will devote some time on Mondays to planning and meetings. Teaching days could include 2, 3, 4, or 5 days depending on availability. Total hours weekly can range from 12-24 hours per week.
Sample Weekly schedule (Sept – June):
- Monday: 9 am to 2 pm for planning, meetings & preparation
- Monday- Friday: ~2pm-6pm for classes (including set up and clean up)
- Working locations include assigned schools as well as the FRESHFARM office (655 New York Ave NW). Some work can also be done from home.
- The opportunity to continue through the summer and following years is contingent upon funding.
PHYSICAL & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- DCPS clearance (free of charge; FoodPrints will provide support to navigate this process as needed)
- Ability to lift, transport, or move objects up to 35 lbs, work outdoors and in various weather.
- Access to a personal smartphone required.
- Access to a personal laptop or chromebook required; if an employee does not have access, or needs a new device, FRESHFARM provides a tri-annual stipend of $500 to purchase such a device.
COMPENSATION
- This role is compensated at a rate $20 – $26 per hour.
- All part-time employees receive 40 hours annual sick leave. This role is eligible for 11 annual holidays (4 hours each) and 40 hours of vacation, with an increase in vacation upon 3 years tenure, as well as bereavement and parental leave.
- This role is not eligible for any company benefits.
