The City of Tacoma is recruiting for the appointive position of Fire Protection Engineer – Senior Engineer. The Tacoma Fire Department is seeking an outgoing, highly motivated person who is interested in diverse and challenging projects to join their dynamic team.
This position reports to the Senior Principal Fire Protection Engineer and is primarily responsible for plan review of fire systems permits, land use permits, and building permits for compliance with the Tacoma Fire Code and referenced standards. The fire protection engineer team is embedded in the commercial building review group and located in the Planning and Development Services Department.

Position Details:
The Fire Protection Engineer provides technical expertise of a consultative nature to City plan checkers, engineers, fire and building inspectors and other City staff. Reviews plans and other written documentation for new construction, modifications and retrofitting for fire and life safety systems and hazardous occupancy requirements; ensures that plans meet federal, state and local codes and regulations; makes recommendations for materials and equipment alternatives to meet codes and regulations. The position supports field inspections, witnesses tests of new and existing fire protection, hazardous materials and similar systems as well as equipment for code and specification adherence and proper operation. Provides information regarding fire, life safety and hazardous materials issues to contractors developers, engineers, architects and the public; responds to and resolves public complaints regarding issues in areas of expertise.
The Fire Protection Engineer position requires a strong ability to communicate technical information about development projects to professionals and non-professionals. Additional duties include the following:
- Evaluating existing buildings and systems for continued compliance and function
- Managing Code violation abatement activities
- Developing local Fire Code amendments and associated policies and procedures
- Providing technical support for major fire investigations
- Coordinating daily with City building plan reviewers and land use planners
- Providing Fire Code interpretation
- Providing technical support to inspectors and other field personnel
- Preparing technical documents and general correspondence
- Developing and presenting technical education programs

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- This is a professional environment with most activities occurring in an office setting with periodic field visits to active construction sites.
- Field work consists of in-the-field collaboration with private contractors and City Inspectors.
- Position may require driving, sitting, standing, walking or climbing for long periods of time.

Qualifications
Qualifications
Four (4) year degree from an accredited college or university in fire protection, civil, mechanical or electrical engineering or related field and five (5) years’ experience as a licensed Professional Engineer.
OR
Over ten (10) years’ work experience in fire protection engineering or related engineering field in lieu of a professional engineering license(s).
Desired Qualifications
- Candidates with experience in design, inspection, or testing of fire suppression systems, fire alarm and detection systems, and/or passive fire protection systems are especially encouraged to apply.
- Candidates with experience using the NFPA family of standards and/or the ICC family of codes are encouraged to apply.
Knowledge & Skills
ANALYTICAL:
Develop methods of data collection and results interpretation. As necessary, implement results of research studies or programs with an appropriate and effective course of action based upon outcome or findings as it applies to assigned engineering duties.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Prepare and present effective oral and written communications for professional and general public use.
LEADERSHIP:
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, the general public, city, county, state and federal agencies while coordinating research in support of assigned department programs. Establish, coordinate and direct work teams to accomplish assigned tasks to a successful completion.
MANAGEMENT:
Plan and organize work to meet schedules and objectives. Remain abreast of the latest management methods and techniques.
PROFESSIONALISM:
Remain current on applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures within engineering field assigned.
TECHNICAL:
Proficient in engineering practices and principles within field of expertise.
