Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:The Financial Specialist in WCER serves as a point of contact to review, approve, reconcile, and advise on a variety of financial transactions. Responsibilities will include reviewing and approving Travel Authorizations, reimbursements, P-card purchases, etc.; This position will also troubleshoot complex financial errors and recommend controls and process improvements; assist with contracts, including ASSAs (academic services and support agreements); and provide policy and procedural guidance to WCER employees and administrative staff on a variety of financial items; and keep appropriate records in accordance with all policies.

WCER employs approximately 500 staff and student researchers, including a team of technology and business professionals. All work is done in a collaborative team environment in support of WCER’s values and strategic goals. The successful candidate will have a continuous improvement mindset and be committed to fostering an environment of Engagement, Inclusion, and Diversity in WCER. The position requires excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communications skills (written and verbal) and the ability to effectively interact and communicate with employees, principal investigators, and administrative leadership. The ability to work under pressure to meet multiple demands while maintaining high service standards is required. The incumbent is expected to be resourceful and manage the workload independently, with the support and cooperation of the WCER business services team and leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES:Primarily reviews, approves, and advises on a variety of complex financial transactions. Reconciles transactions. Maintains financial records, provides administrative processing support, and provides customer service for staff and customers in an assigned program area to support program financial management. Recommends controls and process improvements and troubleshoots complex financial errors. May be a lead or resource for others in the unit.

  • 15% Monitors financial transactions and fund balances and generates and reconciles complex reports and statements in accordance with established rules and regulations
  • 20% Reviews and approves complex transactions and assigns funding codes in accordance with established rules, regulations, and policies
  • 10% Reallocates expenses to appropriate funding strings
  • 15% Drafts communications and reports and maintains organization of varied records to provide administrative support within a specified work unit
  • 15% Answers complex fiscal questions and provides information based on set materials and standards to various audiences
  • 15% Reviews transaction processing internal controls and recommends policies and procedures
  • 5% Serve as a unit liaison to leadership providing financial advice, recommendations, and financial status updates
  • 5% May train staff on financial processes and best practices

QUALIFICATIONS:Required qualifications:
* Proficiency with the full Microsoft Office Suite
* Excellent customer service skills
* Experience processing financial transactions in a system or an online tool
* Experience developing and maintaining financial spreadsheets and records

Preferred qualifications:
* Associate degree in a business-related field, or at least four years of commensurate experience and training
* Experience with the UW finance and accounting systems.
