Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. LWTech offers ten applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees and 93 professional certificates, in 43 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The financial aid specialist is a classified position that supports the financial aid office. Perform specialized financial aid reporting, determine financial aid loan eligibility and awards, provide quality student service, reconcile various grants and funding sources, and resolve financial aid accounting issues under general supervision of the director of financial aid. Interpret financial aid regulations and make awards consistent with specific student aid program guidelines. Administer and award financial aid for federal and state work study, WorkFirst, worker retraining, and student scholarship programs. Interpret and communicate student aid eligibility requirements, application processes, and award decisions. The financial aid specialist works under general supervision as part of a team serving a diverse community.

This is a full-time, temporary position lasting 5 years. If funding is available, the position can be extended.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Interpret federal, state and local financial aid programs and scholarship program regulations and make awards in line with established guidelines; ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations; interpret and monitor compliance issues with all funds to maintain the integrity of college records

• Interview and counsel students on financial, personal, academic and professional-technical problems; make referrals to institution and community resources; serve as an information resource for federal, state, and local financial aid programs and scholarship programs

• Evaluate student’s financial need; determine and award aid and loan certifications, based on federal, state and institutional regulations and availability of funds; review and verify work for procedural compliance and accuracy; resolve problems and perform adjustments related to student accounts and financial aid payments

• Investigate and resolve financial aid repayments and reporting status; refer accounts to Department of Education or State as necessary; reconcile financial funds and monitor fund levels and usage

• Review each financial aid recipient’s academic progress every quarter and determine which students to place on probation, drop or repayment status; coordinate and communicate with other departments and employees to help further student retention and success

• Process repayments and return to applicable federal and state agency; authorize, review, enter, and analyze fiscal transactions and reports; reconcile and report federal and state programs

• Develop and deliver student orientation sessions and conduct workshops on student aid programs

• Compile data from a variety of sources and prepare summary reports as directed; use desktop and specialized computer systems to effectively obtain and calculate data as well as create and develop reports; calculate and tabulate data in line with established formulas; post and balance accounts as required

• Provide coverage and support to the financial aid office, also provide evening hours coverage as necessary

• Regular and satisfactory attendance and punctuality

• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred

• One or more years direct work experience in Financial Aid; customer service or advising experience preferred

• Expertise in financial aid and loan processes and procedures sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibility as described in the above functions

• Thorough knowledge of financial aid regulations and electronic processing systems; ability to work accurately and efficiently in numerical analysis required

• Knowledge of computerized financial management accounting systems and Microsoft Office programs; previous experience with the state community and technical college financial aid system preferred

• Excellent customer service skills and verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to provide quality services to students and apply communication techniques to work effectively with students, employees, vendors, other state agencies, contractors and other persons who have contact with the college

• Ability to work effectively within a team office environment and with a high level of multicultural awareness

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Compensation & Work Schedule This is a union covered position. As defined by the current classified bargained agreement, newly hired employees shall be placed between Step C $4,308 and Step F $4,841 of the salary schedule in Appendix A of the Classified Union Bargaining Agreement. Employees hired with an associate degree will be placed at minimum of step D. Employees hired with a bachelor’s or master’s degree will be placed at minimum of step E. Ongoing (Step G – Step M) step advancement is defined by the classified bargained agreement. Salary placement for current classified employees is per the classified bargained agreement. This position works 40 hours per week. Working hours may vary but are typically between the hours of 7:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday; schedule to be determined by the supervisor.
