ABOUT THIS ROLE
Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance (SDF), the Financial Controller will supervise the Global Accounting team and will lead the day-to-day accounting operations, finance and reporting activities of Water For People’s Global Team, which includes the production of consolidated internal and external financial reports in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable regulatory requirements. You will maintain a robust system of accounting records, a comprehensive set of controls, and will ensure that Water For People has the systems and procedures in place to support effective budget development and monitoring and leads flawless external and internal audits of its financial reports and systems. You will have functional responsibility over month and year-end close processes, revenue, accounts receivable, US payroll, and accounts payable and will lead the optimization of our financial systems.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL
Financial Reporting & Accounting Leadership
- Lead the preparation and reporting of accurate and timely global consolidated financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Ensure orderly accounting filing system and audit trail are maintained and coordinate the annual external global audit
- Oversee the proper recording and allocation of expenses in their proper functional categories, and the reporting of such on the annual IRS Form 990
- Organize data collection, including non-financial items, for IRS Form 990 and coordinate the preparation and timely filing with the external tax accountants
- Provide leadership and oversight over all financial transactions within the Global Team accounting
Treasury, Fixed Assets and Obligations Management
- Perform cash management functions and prepares monthly global cash flow reports and analysis in coordination with responsible units to ensure steady cash flow is maintained
- Track and manage restricted and unrestricted cash balances and net assets
- Assess and report impact of foreign exchange (FX) variance on cash balances and needs
- Assist the SDF in the identification, development, and implementation of investment or financing options and strategies for excess or shortage of cash
- Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines
- Manage banking and other financial institution relationships as well as Water For People’s Line of Credit and other loan accounts
- Oversee fixed asset accounting and reconciliations as part of monthly financial statements
- In coordination with the Director of Finance, provide guidance to Country Programs on proper asset acquisition and disposal steps and entries
- Manage the review, approval and recording of bi-weekly US payroll
Organizational Budget & Projections Management
- Work collaboratively with the SDF and Global Leadership Team (GLT) to lead the annual budget development including preparing templates, setting FX rates, training employees, reviewing and analyzing for reasonableness, and consolidating
- Work closely with the Donor Impact team and the accounting team to have accurate conditional revenue projections
- Coordinate the development of models and forecasts of revenue, expense, cash, and carryover balances for GLT to support strategic decision-making
- Administer and review budgets and actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances in a timely manner
- Lead the consolidation and reporting of quarterly global financial projections
- Manage the development of all Global Team department budgets and projections, including personnel costs
Policy & Controls
- Update and maintain the global Finance Policy Manual, policies and guidelines to ensure appropriate internal controls and to maintain a strong control environment
- Play a key role in helping to assess risk, analyze efficiency and inform policy decisions
- Help define and communicate accounting and financial procedures, rules and treatments and train employees as needed
Accounting Software Administration
- Manage the ongoing relationship and system improvements of the financial accounting software (NetSuite) and act as the administrator of the system
Team Leadership and Management:
- Help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs to leverage strengths of the current finance team members
- Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization
- Establish team goals and assist individuals with goal setting, and conduct performance reviews for direct reports
- Ensure team is following appropriate business processes, procedures and policies
YOU WILL EXCEL IN THIS ROLE IF YOU HAVE
- 5 years of experience in finance or accounting
- 3 years of people management experience
- 3 years nonprofit experience
- Advanced computer proficiencies with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
- US Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Knowledge of accounting and financial planning software, preferably NetSuite
- Corporate consolidations experience
BONUS POINTS IF YOU HAVE
- Master’s degree in accounting or finance
- Spanish language skills
- Foreign currency translation experience

MORE ABOUT THIS ROLE
- Ability to work outside typical office hours at times to collaborate across multiple time zones
- You will have the option to work from an office or remotely in one of the countries where Water For People is present. Water For People will seek candidates from these countries and any state in the US except for: NY, NJ, WA, VT, and CA
- Candidates must be a citizen or legally authorized to work in the country they live in
- Possibility to occasionally travel domestically and internationally to low- and middle-income countries, where travel is rugged
- Open office environment if choosing to work from the Denver, CO office

Salary Range:
Anticipated salary range: $90,000 – $122,000 (If based outside the US an equivalent country market – based salary will be determined)
Actual salary will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors.
