Full-Time Field Operator

Job Description

We are looking for a Field Operator to join our team! The opportunities for this position are endless as the District owns, operates and maintains a complex collection and distribution system with 73 pressure zones, 161 pressure reducing valves, 268 miles of water main, 1,938 fire hydrants, 210 miles of sanitary sewer main, and 6,338 manholes. The operation of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems is critical in serving our mission of providing efficient, effective, and reliable water and wastewater utility services to our community in a manner that respects the natural environment.

This is an exciting opportunity for a mechanically inclined self-starter looking for workplace stability while still pushing forward to develop their skills and stay ahead of the curve with industry best practices. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical skills, likes to operator heavy equipment, and enjoys being part of a team. This position has a good mix of outdoor field work and office work.

The Day to Day:

  • Repair and maintain District water distribution and wastewater collection assets such as fire hydrants, water mains, valves, sewer lines, manholes, lift stations and similar equipment using a variety of power and hand tools, as well as occasional use of heavy equipment (e.g., backhoes, backhoe loaders, dump trucks, water/sewer jetting trucks, tractors, and lowboy trailers).
  • Assist experienced Field Operators with service line locates, taps and leak detections using locating equipment, leak noise correlators, and sounding equipment; televises sewer mains.
  • Create and complete work orders and updates asset information in asset management software (e.g., CityWorks).
  • Access and refer to customer service documents and equipment information/specifications in enterprise-wide collaboration software (e.g., Microsoft SharePoint) to complete work and effectively organize, communicate, and record information.
  • Assist with fire hydrant flow tests, fire line flush tests, and data collection concerning utilization and efficiency of water system assets.
  • Use a variety of hand tools, machinery, and heavy equipment common to the repair, inspection and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Follow organizational safety policies and protocols wears always required job-related personal protective equipment.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret maps, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Communicate information effectively and respectfully to address questions from colleagues, clients, and the general public
  • Reflect the organization’s mission, vision, and values by working independently and collaboratively in team-based environment, while demonstrating a strong work ethic, professional behavior, and a positive attitude.
  • Establish and maintain highly effective and respectful working relationships with colleagues, managers, members of the public, agency representatives, and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Perform other assigned duties of similar nature and complexity as those described above.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Any combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge and abilities including relevant college level coursework, formal training program in water distribution or wastewater collection, or six months construction/maintenance experience, preferably involving work with water service lines.
  • Mechanical experience working with pumps, motors, seal replacements, or other relevant mechanical skills preferred. Must be comfortable performing repetitive preventative maintenance tasks, including turning valves, jetting, CCTV work, and fire hydrant maintenance.
  • Colorado Distribution and Collection Licenses strongly preferred. Must be able to obtain Colorado Distribution I and Collection I certifications within one year of start date. All Certifications and Licenses must be kept current.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s license and be insurable under District’s standards. Must obtain a class “B” Commercial Driver’s License or higher within six months of employment.
  • Must be willing to work overtime, weekends and be on call.
  • Proven customer service skills and the ability to work productively with minimal direct supervision. Excellent communications skills (both written and verbal) are essential. This position works closely with consumers, contractors, developers and other District departments.
  • Must obtain CPR/First Aid Certification within the first six (6) months of employment.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

Hiring Range:

There are four levels of Field Operators with different titles and pay ranges depending on certifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Starting pay depends on qualifications but generally falls within the minimum and mid-point of the pay range. Pay range for each level are as follows:

  • Field Operator I: $24.18 – $33.86
  • Field Operator II: $26.66 – $37.33
  • Field Operator III: $29.39 – $41.16
  • Senior Field Operator: $32.41 – $45.37
