- Plan, schedule and perform subsurface investigations with a drill crew to gather test data and samples for roadway, bridge and culvert foundations, retaining walls, noise walls, and other transportation infrastructure.
- Maintain field notes and records relating to borings during the investigations.
- Maintain accurate, concise field records of boring depths, soil and rock stratigraphy including composition, moisture, origin, density, and color.
- Prepare field diagrams or maps of subsurface and drainage features and interpret soil sampling needs.
- Locate and use technical reports and papers and interpret geotechnical data for use in projects.
- Recognize human-made and geologic formations, including areas of special geotechnical interest during subsurface investigations, and adjust investigations as needed to document issues.
- Evaluate and interpret field test and laboratory analysis to ensure they factually represent the engineering properties of the subsurface materials along a project, and compile them into graphic form on subsurface plans, profiles, and cross sections.
- Assist Project Geological Engineers in preparing requests for proposals and cost estimates for consultant projects.
- Occasionally supervise consultant’s field work and review their subsurface inventory and geotechnical recommendations reports.
- Knowledge of the principles and methods of geology/geotechnical engineering related to subsurface investigations for highway construction and facilities.
- Experience determining boring locations and depths based on the proposed project type.
- Knowledge of engineering design criteria and the engineering properties of soil and rock encountered during investigations.
- Experience communicating work to be performed to property owners and utility locating services.
- Computer experience using gINT, MicroStation, Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) to create geotechnical subsurface inventory reports.
- Experience with requests for proposals and In-house cost estimates.
- Bachelors degree in Engineering; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Registration as a Geologist In Training (GIT) or an Engineer Intern (EI) with the state of North Carolina is preferred.
- Frequent overnight travel is possible.
- You may be required to register as a professional engineer with the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
