Summary of Responsibilities:
This is a full-time, annual renewable position. Summer quarter employment is available based on student enrollment.
Lake Washington Technical Academy is a unique accredited technical high school that is embedded in Lake Washington Institute of Technology. The Faculty Counselor for High School Programs is a vital member of the high school programs team, focusing on academic advising, career guidance, and student support. Collaborating closely with the Advisors and other Faculty Counselor, this role contributes to creating a positive school culture for academic achievement, career and college readiness, and social-emotional development. The Faculty Counselor for high school collaborates with college faculty and staff on issues related to the success of high school students and provides short-term crisis intervention and counseling services to students. Reporting to the Dean of High School Programs, the Faculty Counselor ensures students receive comprehensive guidance and support to achieve their educational goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Academic Advising and Registration
• Provide comprehensive academic advising to assigned caseload of students, focusing on academic planning, career exploration, and course registration.
• Evaluate high school and college transcripts, evaluate college placement scores.
• Assist students in understanding high school graduation requirements, degree pathways, and certificate programs.
• Facilitate the registration process for high school and college classes, ensuring students enroll in appropriate courses.
• Collaborate with the other Faculty Counselor on transfer and career planning initiatives.
• Make timely and relevant referrals to internal and external resources including other high school completion programs such as HS+ and Grad Alliance
• Complete student intake and exit processes; conduct interviews as needed.
• Support general advising drop-in hours by providing general academic advising assistance to high school students in all LWTech programs.
Student Support and Counseling Services
• Offer career, educational, and short-term personal counseling to students with cultural humility, fostering their social-emotional well-being and academic success. This can include having weekly/bi-weekly counseling sessions with students.
• Identify and address individual student needs, providing community referrals and assistance as necessary.
• Provide crisis intervention to individuals and/or groups of students in case of health issues, family issues, suicidal ideation, or other personal problems; refer to internal and external resources as needed.
• Utilize data to identify, implement and evaluate student (individual or group) practices that might reduce impediments to student learning and enhance student success.
• Adhere to legal and ethical standards and principles of the school counseling profession and educational systems, as well as follow departmental, college and state policies and procedures.
Program Support, Collaboration, and Teaching
• Develop strategies to enhance connections between college faculty/staff and high school students, promoting student engagement and success.
• Utilize data to identify barriers to student learning and implement effective practices to support student achievement.
• Support the high school mission with advocacy, leadership, and collaboration and utilize high school accreditation standards to contribute to continuous school improvement efforts.
• Collaborate with stakeholders, including parents, teachers, administrators, and community leaders, to promote educational equity and student success.
• Represent Lake Washington Technical Academy on college committees and within the K-12 community, advocating for the needs of high school students.
• Participate in self-improvement and professional development activities in field of expertise and demonstrate current knowledge and skills.
• Develop strategies and increase awareness to foster and support cultural diversity and nondiscrimination.
• Teach assigned courses such as college strategies, high school and beyond planning, advisory, health, and career exploration to support student success and meet state graduation requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Possess disposition, knowledge, skills and interest in working with high school age students.
• Master’s degree with academic preparation appropriate to a counseling assignment
• High School counselor ESA certification preferred.
• School Social Work ESA certification preferred.
• Demonstrated ability in individual and group counseling.
• Demonstrated skill and experience working with multiethnic and multicultural populations.
• Two years of experience working with high school age populations.
• Excellent verbal and written skills; teaching experience preferred.
• Knowledge of MS Office in an IBM environment preferred.

Compensation & Work Schedule This position is for the 2024-2025 Academic year and begins September 2024. Placement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. This positions ranges from $74,028-$87,146 per year; salary is for an academic year (173 days) and as may be adjusted according to the faculty bargained agreement. Summer quarter employment may be available based on student enrollment.
