Full-Time External Relations Specialist
Job Description
LEO is looking for an experienced practitioner in external relations who can help craft and communicate our accomplishments and vision for poverty reduction in America.
Who we are:
The Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO) is a research center dedicated to reducing poverty and improving lives in the United States through evidence-based programs and policies.
The Challenge:
In order to successfully reduce poverty in America, it is not enough for LEO to produce best-in- class research. LEO must also successfully communicate the results of its work, and furthermore lead the conversation about the importance of rigorous evaluation in the poverty intervention space.
LEO must inform and motivate a diverse and important set of audiences in order to lead this conversation and fulfill our mission. Among them are: non-profit service providers, policy- makers, academic researchers, donors (including individuals, foundations and corporations) and the Notre Dame community. We are seeking an External Relations Specialist to lead these efforts across all of LEO’s constituencies.
Who we need:
Top priorities include leading content creation, executing upon a broader marketing plan, and driving brand positioning to various stakeholders. To do so requires translating rigorous research and academic terminology into compelling narratives about the lives they represent for the poor and vulnerable in America. This position will ensure consistency and excellence across all of LEO’s communications to external audiences.
Content creation
- Communicate LEO’s work to date and LEO’s future plans using our website, social media, and other relevant mediums.
- Leverage University resources to create content and build brand awareness.
- Partner with LEO team members to gather information on LEO’s work and translate it into messages targeted to each of our external constituents.
- Ensure consistency and excellence in all of LEO’s messaging and branding efforts.
Content Management
- Manage existing communications outlets, gather information and priorities from key stakeholders, and develop methodologies for capturing and deploying content going forward.
- Maintain relevant, accurate, and mission-relevant content across all of LEO’s platforms.
Brand Building
- Help establish LEO as a leader in the field by driving the conversation forward among our key constituents.
- Guided by LEO leadership, properly steward LEO supporters through relevant and targeted messaging and communications.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate has strong written communication skills, demonstrated project management and content creation experience, an ability to grasp and distill complicated topics, and a commitment to LEO’s mission.
Writing and Communication Skills
- Must be able to distill complicated topics into interesting and easy to digest pieces. Interviewing skills and experience working internally and externally with people of all socioeconomic backgrounds are preferred.
Relevant Software and Hardware Expertise
- Experience with the tools necessary to manage and contribute to the website. Familiarity and facility with website content management systems and experience with digital and print production, e-newsletter tools.
Project Management Experience
- Work with vendors, LEO staff, and non-profit staff/clients to execute projects on time and within budget.
Creativity and problem-solving abilities
- We are a small team; the candidate must find creative ways to get things done elegantly in a University environment.
Analytical capabilities and mindset
- The ability to communicate complex issues and intricate research effectively is crucial.
Experience and Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Communications, Design, Fine Arts, or a related field preferred. 5+ years relevant sector experience.
This is a limited-term position subject to availability of externally sponsored funding with a current end date of June 30, 2022.
