Full-Time Export Assistance Network Trade Counselor

Job Summary

Serve as the Trade Advisor for the SBDC Export Assistance Network within the 12-county greater Cleveland-Akron region. The Trade Advisor provides assistance and technical services to small- and medium-sized businesses within a portion of this region in order to promote growth in exports. Maintains thorough client files and documentation. Primarily responsible for client counseling in the area of international trade, which includes direct, in-depth client contact in one-on-one meetings along with telephone and written communications. Responsible for research with an emphasis on detail and accurate documentation, preparing materials suggesting alternative courses of action, and exercising absolute confidentiality of client information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferably in International Business Administration, Marketing, Management, Operations, or related field.
  • Three (3) years experience in business management activities.
  • Related work experience may be substituted for education requirements. One (1) year of related work experience can be substituted for one (1) year of education. For example, a candidate with a high school diploma, GED, or state-recognized equivalent and seven (7) years of related work experience can be eligible to apply.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) or Certified Business Advisor (CBA) certification.
    • Previous work in international sales, operations, shipping, logistics, or export compliance for a private sector company, government agency, NGO, or non-profit institution
    • Customs broker license or a business certificate in international trade from an accredited program.
    • Work experience in a foreign country (ex-pat assignment, trade mission, foreign trade show, etc.)
    • Experience in international methods of payments, export financing and other financial programs
    • Familiarity with the existing network in the international arena to be able to counsel and introduce clients to the services required to complete export sale

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • General knowledge of principles and practices of international business is required.
    • Skills to design and deliver new training programs as the needs are identified by clients
    • Demonstrated familiarity of export licensing procedures (ITAR, EAR, OFAC, etc.)
    • The ability to meet baseline requirements established by the Department of Development within a two (2) year period.
    Proficient in English and with a strong ability to speak in public.
    • High level of communication and analytical skills.
    • Ability to handle multiple assignments, organize and establish work priorities with minimal direction and supervision.
    • Ability to operate a computer and run related program software.
    • The ability to travel as required and holder of valid driver’s license.
    • Ability to interact professionally using strong interpersonal skills.
