The Opportunity

The Executive Vice President (EVP) will work hand-in-hand with the President to ensure the success and sustainability of the organization. This position is focused on aligning the work of the organization. Working out of the Office of the President, the position directly oversees the Office of Programs and the Office of Development and Partnerships while working in partnership with the Office of Finance and Operations to ensure that the President’s priorities are reflected in the work and advanced. Strong execution and implementation of the President’s vision is a core responsibility, in close partnership with the Manager of the Office of the President. In addition, primary tasks include organizational strategy and planning, systems and infrastructure development, and workplace culture support.

The Executive Vice President will provide support at every level, serve as a trusted advisor and resource, and foster communication, knowledge sharing, and effective strategizing throughout the organization. The EVP must be able to understand, clearly articulate, and operationalize the President’s ideas, thoughts, and perspectives as they relate to the organization’s purpose and objectives. This person must be able to interface successfully with external entities using diplomacy and discretion. The position will also serve as the President’s ambassador in dealing with key external constituencies, including the Board of Directors, members, funders, and organizational partners of the organization.

The Executive Vice President’s responsibilities include:

  • Lead, support and facilitate organization-wide programmatic planning efforts, including strategic planning, work planning, and budgeting; evaluate alternatives and develop new approaches to resolving problems; assess ambiguous and/or changing facts or conditions affecting the organization internally and externally;
  • Offer key project management and implementation support for the Office of the President; support the President with strategic analysis and decision-making; ensure clear and transparent communication across the organization;
  • Facilitate, manage, and organize national staff meetings, Senior Leadership Team meetings, and SVP meetings in partnership with Senior Leadership Team;
  • Supervise the Senior Vice President of Programs and the Senior Vice President of Development and Partnerships and support programmatic and political alignment across the organization;
  • In partnership with the Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations, work to ensure a healthy and sustainable workplace culture that reflects Race Forward’s values, including the onboarding of new staff to the racial justice mission of Race Forward;
  • Support the development team to respond to requests for proposals for funding, including serving as the liaison with potential and current funders, completing grant reports, developing proposal budgets, and financial projections;
  • Serve as liaison to the Race Forward Board of Directors and support the Board in execution of their annual work plan;
Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

  • Strong understanding of the racial justice movement, including Race Forward’s mission, vision, and programmatic work;
  • 10-15 years of experience in senior leadership within the nonprofit sector; specific experience working with philanthropy, social justice movements and organizational development;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, fiscal management experience, the ability to effectively delegate and maintain a “big picture” strategic view;
  • Experience working with communities of color and applying a racial equity analysis in policies and processes;
  • Strong organizational and project management skills; ability to anticipate, improvise, and adapt for optimal resolutions; ability to consistently manage workloads effectively, use resources efficiently, and orchestrate multiple activities at once to accomplish a goal;
  • Prior experience working in results-oriented environments, with responsibility for managing multiple projects; hands-on strategy development experience, with a successful record in achieving positive outcomes; experience developing and tracking project and organizational budgets;
  • Management and supervisory experience, with the ability to successfully build team cohesion and morale, while leading teams towards shared organizational goals; ability to form and maintain strong collaborative partnerships with members of the SVP team, Senior Leadership Team, Board of Directors, donors, organizational partners, and other strategic stakeholders;
  • Ability to communicate and effectively share information with senior leadership and other audiences;
  • Ability to manage complex projects with multiple moving pieces, stakeholders, and deadlines; strong interpersonal and relational skills, adept at facilitating large groups towards a common goal;
  • Ability to exercise discretion, sound judgment, and the highest professional ethics;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Cultivates and generates new ideas and customized approaches that add value and foster innovative solutions; thinks critically, anticipating unintended impacts of decisions; engages the correct stakeholders with a specific emphasis on BIPOC communities, and identifies ways to connect their work to the work of other departments and teams as well as to Race Forward’s mission, vision, and values.
