Full-Time Executive Office Lead

The postholder is responsible for working with the Chair and Chief Executive to ensure the effectiveness of Social Work England’s board and committees, and in providing administrative support to the executive leadership team. This includes:

  • Making sure that our board operates in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements and our Framework Agreement with the Department for Education and Department of Health and Social Care.
  • Ensuring that we are governed in a fair and transparent way by leading development of the annual governance work plan, enabling the board to set and achieve Social Work England’s strategic goals.

What you will do

  • In conjunction with the Chair and Chief Executive, plan the annual programme of board and committee meetings to align with the annual business cycle
  • Ensure our Corporate Governance Framework is in line with best practice and is kept up-to-date for the board, executive leadership team and directorates.
  • Prepare board and committee agendas in liaison with the relevant Chairs and the executive leadership team.
  • Ensure the smooth management, openness and transparency of our board meetings by providing advice to board members where required; ensuring timeliness, quality and accuracy of papers and minutes and maintaining an ongoing action log, ensuring sign off by Chief Executive and Chair and acting on their behalf to track and co-ordinate progress
  • Produce/oversee the production of timely and accurate minutes of meetings and maintain an ongoing action log, ensuring
  • Line manage and develop the team of Directors Assistants, Executive Assistant and Executive Officer
  • Ensure that board papers are published (as appropriate) to our website and staff intranet, and that the governance sections are regularly reviewed and include an up to date policy library, register of interests and gifts and hospitality register.
  • Oversee annual board and committee effectiveness surveys and support the Chair in identifying action plans for the ongoing development needs of the board. Work with colleagues and the sponsor team on succession planning for board members, and to facilitate and co-ordinate induction and training for board members.
  • Coordinate the planning, production and laying of our Annual Report and Accounts, working with colleagues across the organisation, Head of Finance, Sponsor Team, and external audit team
  • Manage pay and non-pay budgets in accordance with our financial systems, procedures and protocols.
  • Lead and deliver corporate initiatives for example development and implementation of our Sustainability Plan and reporting on performance to the executive leadership team and the board
  • Support the executive leadership team to develop and agree the internal audit strategy and annual plan; track delivery of the plan and lead the contract management relationship with our internal audit team, ensuring effective two-way communications.

Your skills, knowledge and experience

  • Experience of planning and supporting regular governance or other formal meetings, including agenda coordination and planning, minuting and follow-up of actions.
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills, and the ability to manage several different tasks while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written communication skills including the ability to present information on complex issues clearly and succinctly for a range of different audiences.
  • The ability to identify, understand and clearly explain principles of good governance and legislation.
  • A proven track record of a diplomatic approach and the confidence to liaise appropriately with colleagues at all levels.
  • The ability to act with integrity and discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • A strong team player, capable of developing effective relationships at all levels within our organisation and with key external partners.
  • A strong track record of managing and developing teams
  • A track record of respectful, open and honest behaviour including a demonstrable commitment to inclusion and diversity.
  • Membership of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators or other relevant professional qualification is desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience of governance and board administration within a public, third sector or regulatory organisation is desirable.

  • Job type: Fixed-term for up to 2 years
  • Working pattern: full-time. We offer flexible working subject to business need.
  • Salary: £43,505 per year, rising to £45,629 per year after successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.
