Job Description

The Missouri Organizing and Voter Engagement Collaborative (MOVE) and Missouri Organizing and Voter Engagement Action (MOVE Action) are c3 and c4 tables operating jointly as a hub for progressive, grassroots organizations to shift power and reclaim democracy in Missouri. By coordinating and catalyzing strategic voter engagement efforts across the state, MOVE and MOVE Action are building a 1.6 million voter strong multiracial governing majority in Missouri that can win progressive policies and elect progressive candidates. Doing so requires that we simultaneously center building Black political power while moving large numbers of conflicted white voters from politics motivated by dog whistle racism into multiracial solidarity. We achieve our goals as a backbone entity supporting the front-facing voter engagement work of our grassroots and progressive member organizations in deep collaborative relationships across Missouri.

 

Position Summary

MOVE is seeking its next Executive Director, replacing its founding director, to develop and execute strategy towards state governing power. This will require investing in deep partnership with the board of directors, managing a growing team to catalyze coordinated strategy across the state, and working directly with member organizations leading voter engagement and organizing efforts across Missouri on campaigns at the national, state, and local levels. Members of MOVE and MOVE Action are active in every corner of the state with voters who run the gamut of political ideology, and MOVE’s next leader will be prepared to navigate this complicated and diverse political terrain, providing the leadership to execute the financial and technical support to help critical campaigns succeed. The Executive Director will also play a key role in championing the work of MOVE and MOVE Action members and aligning other progressive leaders in the Missouri progressive ecosystem with our 1.6 million governing majority goal. 

 

Position Title: Executive Director

Location: Missouri, with current staff offices in Kansas City and St Louis and regular travel throughout the state required

Status: Full-time, Exempt

 

Responsibilities

MOVE’s next Executive Director will be responsible for strengthening the multiracial coalition committed to the political transformation of Missouri and catalyzing its diverse organizational membership to build a progressive governing majority. This will include a range of tasks which can be classified under strategic coalition management, progressive ecosystem leadership, organizational management, and fundraising.

 

Strategic Coalition Building (30%)

  • Organize leadership of collaborative organizations toward a long-term progressive governing majority through sustainable multi-cycle efforts
  • Through deep and sustained relationship across the leadership of member organizations, catalyze alignment and accountability toward shared goals
  • Work with the Board and partners to assess collaborative electoral capacity and explore areas for growth

 

Progressive Ecosystem Leadership (25%)

  • Manage strategic political and movement relationships on behalf of MOVE to advance alignment in the progressive ecosystem beyond existing membership
  • Strengthen progressive infrastructure in Missouri to advance a multicycle governing majority. Where infrastructure gaps exist, support the creation of new, aligned entities. 
  • Through deep relationship and institutional influence, work to shift the progressive ecosystem into alignment with MOVE analysis and values 

 

Organizational Management (25%)

  • Manage, support, and develop two direct reports each managing an organizational department with multiple reports
  • Oversee the general operations of three aligned organizations: a c3, a c4, and a state PAC.
  • Work with a Board of Directors to ensure ongoing strategic alignment to multicycle goals in a regularly evolving political ecosystem.

 

Fundraising (20%)

  • Set ambitious multi-year budgets and fundraising plans in collaboration with Development Director
  • Inspire interest and multi-million dollar investments from the national progressive ecosphere into Missouri in election and non-election years
  • Manage large donor relationships in coordination with the Development Director

 

Required Skills and Experience

An ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience building and executing strategic voter engagement program, experience in statewide campaigns and grassroots voter engagement a plus
  • Strong sense of ownership and resilience with respect to planning ahead, finding alternative paths when needed, and bouncing back from setbacks and rejections
  • Clear, precise, compassionate communication and active listening skills 
  • Demonstrated experience supporting/uplifting staff including BIPOC staff and staff with other marginalized identities into higher positions of leadership
  • Skilled in organizational management (2+ years) that centers meeting ambitious multi-year outcomes without compromising staff well-being
  • Past work experience in a progressive space, with a preference for some past work in 501c3s and/or 501c4s. Experience working with a board of directors a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience centering grassroots institutions and movements in past work
  • Ability to move people to action and hold them accountable with and without formal authority
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully execute complex projects with minimal support or oversight, including setting goals and developing a realistic work plan that includes multiple staff. 
  • Extensive past senior leadership experience (5+ years) preferred

 

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: The salary range for this position is $110,000-$120,000 and is commensurate with experience.

 

Benefits:  Comprehensive benefits package includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for an individual and +80% employer-paid coverage for families; 2% automatic contribution and a 3% employer match on 401k.
