Full-Time Excavator

Job Description

Our mission is to provide efficient, effective, and reliable water and wastewater utility services in a manner that respects the natural environment. Our water and wastewater systems are critical links that make this happen. We are seeking an experienced Excavator to join our Field Operations team. The Excavator will perform activities related to utility excavations, heavy equipment operations, and job site management and safety.   

This position supports the goals of the Field Operations Department, which maintains and enhances the safety and well-being of the community by providing exceptional water and wastewater service and maintaining the District’s extensive network of underground assets. The department continuously strives to meet the needs of the community by constantly focusing on customer service, efficient and effective utilization of resources, safety, innovation, and teamwork. 

The regular schedule for this position will be 40 hours a week Monday-Friday and will be responsible for occasional on-call shifts. The duties of this position will vary by season and needs of the Field Operations department. When excavation and heavy equipment duties are not necessary, you will work as a Systems Maintenance operator and support the field operations crew.

The Day to Day 

 

  • Operates an excavator to complete tasks such as digging and excavating, trucks to complete tasks such as transporting equipment and materials, and front loader to complete tasks such as load equipment and materials. 
  • May troubleshoot or performance preventative maintenance for heavy equipment; perform daily safety and maintenance checks; complete paperwork and other documentation as needed 
  • Trains others on safe utility excavation techniques; plans and manages job sites for safe and efficient excavations in coordination with field operations supervisors and manager.  
  • Utilizes Cityworks, CO811 and WebTMS prepares various reports, forms, photos and memos to document work orders, and problems encountered and/or resolved. 
  • Creates and completes computer-generated work orders daily using GIS and CMMS (CityWorks). 
  • Updates ERWSD/UERWA program-related records. 
  • Verifies field information and notifies the designated departments regarding updates and corrections. 
  • Investigates and prepares detailed written documentation on excavations that result in damage to underground utilities. 
  • Assists in shut down of water & sewer mains, and in water & sewer mains repairs or water & sewer services. 
  • Provides support and back up to the Field Operations and Customer Service staff. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of District Rules & Regulations regarding development and construction. 
  • Coordinate activities with other District Departments and/or Divisions. 
  • Required to follow all District safety and security policies and wear Personal Protective Equipment as required by the job duties. 
  • Other duties as assigned 

 

Qualifications 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • Must be 18 years or older. 
  • High school diploma or GED, and two years of directly related excavation and heavy equipment operations experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. 
  • Experience with utility specific excavations highly preferred. 
  • Colorado Distribution and Collection Licenses preferred. 
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Collection 1 and Distribution 1 certifications through CCWP within the first 12 months of employment. 
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Collection 3 and Distribution 3 certifications through CCWP within the first three years of employment. 
  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures of the Colorado 811 system preferred. 
  • Must be able to maintain small to medium-sized equipment and trucks. 
  • Proven customer service skills and the ability to work productively with minimal direct supervision. 
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. 
  • Ability to read and interpret utility maps and as-built civil engineering drawings (this also includes cut-sheets and curb stop diagrams). 
  • Excellent communications skills (both written and verbal) are essential. This position works closely with consumers, contractors, developers and other District Departments. 
  • Computer proficiency required, including basic Microsoft Office skills. 
  • Ability to work with CMMS (CityWorks) to create work orders and use GIS and GPS to read maps. 
  • Ability to use office equipment such as phone systems, copier, fax machine, and radio system. 
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s license and be insurable under District’s standards. 
  • Must obtain CPR/First Aid Certification within the first six months of employment. 
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver License with the following endorsements: Air Brakes, Tanker, and Combination Vehicle/Class “A”. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position is physical in nature, and requires sufficient physical strength and stamina for: 

  • Constant standing and walking on uneven terrain in various conditions to perform work, constant squatting, bending and kneeling to perform work at various sites. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and stand to operate heavy equipment at various construction sites. 
  • Frequent sitting to write reports and drive to and from work sites. 
  • Occasional climbing and balancing on ladders, stairs, framing and step ladders at unprotected heights to look for structural hazards; occasional reaching overhead and below shoulder to manipulate tools and equipment. 
  • Frequent light grasp, hand manipulation and handling needed to use equipment; occasional firm grasp is needed to manipulate tools 
  • Frequent stepping up/down to get in and out of vehicles, trenches and foundations; frequent actuate mechanism needed to safely operate vehicles 
  • Frequent use of vision to detect hazards; constant use of near acuity to write reports and perform office tasks 
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of up to 25 pounds 
  • Must be able to talk and hear. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions including variable hot and cold temperatures, snow, rain, hail, etc. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and confined spaces and construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. 

 

HIRING RANGE 

There are two levels of Excavator (I, II) with different titles and pay ranges depending on certifications, knowledge, skills and abilities. Pay range and title depend on certifications and experience. Starting range depends on qualifications but generally falls within the minimum and midpoint of the pay range. Pay ranges for each level are as follows:  

  • Excavator I: $29.10 – $40.75  
  • Excavator II: $32.09 – $44.92
