Currently, a small company that is expanding rapidly. We are committed to helping environmental organizations and sustainability-focused businesses reach their community and conservation goals using social science techniques and diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. We use applied social science and robust relationship-building to understand our stakeholders better. We also spearhead equitable conservation by conducting training for conservation organizations to completely revolutionize our current, outdated approach to conservation.
Position Description:
You will be working closely with a busy and outgoing entrepreneur who runs a company that assists environmental organizations in achieving both their social and environmental outcomes. We are looking for an individual with a background in Conservation/Environmental Science and Planning that has experience facilitating workshops and creating J.E.D.I. (JUSTICE, EQUALITY, DIVERSITY, INCLUSION)- centered coursework, and has incorporated J.E.D.I. into conservation planning. This position will take the lead on facilitating J.E.D.I. – focused workshops for conservation-minded organizations. The Equitable Conservation Specialist will also come in as a collaborator with the business. Much of this work will focus on trust-building with stakeholders for various organizations.
Lacy Consulting Services has a series of existing workshops that the Equitable Conservation Specialist will be required to facilitate on their own with clients. These include:
- Building and Sustaining Trust with Diverse Communities
- J.E.D.I. 101
- L.E.T. (Listen. Empower. Transform)
- Approaches to Integrating J.E.D.I. into Conservation Planning
- LBTQIA+ in Conservation
- People Requiring Assistance in Conservation
- Emotions and Valuing in Conservation Planning
We will provide recorded videos, PowerPoint Presentations, and documentation for this position to read and watch over the first month of employment to allow an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the materials. The employee will also watch live workshops. Employees will be expected to run workshops alone after the first month.
Some previous projects are Lacy Consulting Services’ work in Mexico conserving bat populations through community engagement, projects in The Bahamas facilitating working relationships between fishers and law enforcement to prevent poaching and create marine protected areas, and building trust between diverse, BIPOC farmers and conservation organizations across North America.
This position will expand your strengths to encompass work such as J.E.D.I in conservation programming, facilitation, and taking the lead on new projects.
Tasks will include, but are not limited to:
- Facilitate workshops
- Create summary documents
- Present results of workshops to leadership and discuss next steps
- Cold-calling clients to find leads
- Writing proposals
- Infusing J.E.D.I. principles into all Lacy Consulting projects as needed
- Attending speaking engagements to promote Equitable Conservation and market Lacy Consulting Services at conferences
- Become the face of Equitable Conservation globally
Requirements:
- Lived experience with diverse identities (trans, BIPOC, disabled, religion, LGBQIA+)
- 2+ years of experience in implementing conservation projects
- Use and facilitation of the Conservation Standards or similar framework
- Coursework taken in Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (or equivalent)
- Willing to collaborate with other J.E.D.I. consultants, as needed
- 2+ years in J.E.D.I. workshop facilitation
- Have proven techniques to avoid burnout when engaging conservation organizations on the topic of J.E.D.I. in conservation
- Computer, high-speed internet, and quiet place to work/give presentations from
Preferred:
- Implemented conservation project from the planning stage to the final product
- Held a leadership position in an employee resource group at a conservation organization
- Ability to write and speak in more than 1 language (Spanish and/or Portuguese especially)
- Personal experience with J.E.D.I. principles
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally
Compensation:
As the work level alters between projects, this position will be hourly at $35/hour for 20-40 hours/week depending on if the candidate chooses to work part-time or full-time.
The contract is subject to performance review and the employer will provide a 30-day notice to terminate if the contractor is not meeting performance standards which will include both tangible and intangible project and workplace metrics.
