Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
This skilled position provides maintenance and repair of light and heavy duty vehicles and off road machinery. Work involves performing skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel and hydraulic powered equipment. Employees in this class will also perform welding and body repairs. Work is performed under general supervision allowing maximum opportunity for independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Install, repair and recondition auxiliary equipment used on vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to, snow plows, snow blowers, sweepers, flail mowers, etc. 22.5%
• Repair brakes, air conditioning systems, engines, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies, clutches, and related systems. 22.5%
• Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and determine the most effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement. 20%
• Test, repair, recondition and maintain machinery and equipment, including, but not limited to, trucks, trailers, tractors, endloaders, excavators, dozers, motor graders, etc. 20%
• Operate a variety of hand, electric and air driven tools provided by Central Garage. 5%
• Keep shop areas and equipment in a safe and orderly fashion. 5%
• Perform other duties as assigned. 5%
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
• Graduate from an accredited Technical College in Automotive, Diesel or Heavy Equipment
Mechanics with three (3) years of experience.
• Five (5) years of experience with progressively advanced training working on diesel engines or heavy equipment in lieu of degree.
• Knowledge in the use of test equipment for electronic engines, transmissions, etc.
• Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin CDL, Class A with N endorsement and no air brake restriction.
• Possess and maintain certification for EVT I, including applicable ASE certifications.
• Possess and maintain State of Wisconsin welding qualification/certification, or have the ability to obtain this within one year of starting date.
• Possess and maintain Automotive Air Conditioning certification, or have the ability to obtain within one year of starting date.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices used in a variety of maintenance and repair operations on machinery and mechanical equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of the mechanical principles by which machines, equipment and tools operate, both in the maintenance and repair of equipment, and in the design and construction of specialized equipment.
• Knowledge of brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies, snowplows, and related systems.
• Understanding of preventative maintenance philosophies and maintenance programs.
• Ability to diagnose problems and schedule proper repair work.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards encountered with the trade.
• Knowledge of welding concepts and practices.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, and outside in various weather conditions exposed to wet, cold, hot and humid conditions. Safety equipment will be supplied when the employee is exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, or flying debris. The noise level in the work area is moderately noisy.
