Full-Time Environmental Education Coordinator (TQT AmeriCorps Member)

Campus Compact has recently launched the Campus Climate Action Corps (CCAC). CCAC Corps members will serve at one of our host sites in the Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast regions. Campus Compact is recruiting an Environmental Education Coordinator (Three-quarter-time AmeriCorps Member) who will be primarily responsible for collaborating with CCAC staff and AmeriCorps members on the development of interpretive and educational programs that focus on climate action, environmental stewardship, and energy efficiency.

 

Position Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop environmental education lessons and hands-on activities that focus on climate action, environmental stewardship, and energy efficiency
  • Develop new curriculum, modify and improve existing lessons, and tailor lessons and presentations to different audiences
  • Train other AmeriCorps members on how to deliver lessons to community members
  • Develop pre- and post- assessments that will evaluate the impact of the lessons and activities
  • Collaborate with Energy Efficiency Coordinator to create energy conservation educational content
  • Collaborate with Communications Coordinator to share educational content to our social media accounts
  • Coordinate and facilitate environmental education events in underserved communities that focus on:
    • Energy conservation strategies and resources that reduce carbon emissions and increase cost savings
    • Low-tech interventions to reduce energy use and increase cost savings for underserved households based on community needs (e.g. weatherization, LED light bulbs, window-insulation inserts)
    • At-risk ecosystems (e.g. removal of invasive species, tree planting, installation of rain gardens)
    • Green jobs and workforce development pathways
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers to assist with lessons and special events

 

Term of Service: The term of service will run from November through July 31, 2024. As a Three-quarter-time AmeriCorps member, the CCAC Environmental Education Coordinator must complete 1200 hours during the service term. Depending on the exact start date, we anticipate this will come out to approximately 33-35 hours per week.

 

Service Location: The CCAC Community Education Coordinator will serve at one of our Campus Compact host sites (Boston or Chicago), with teleservice possible.

 

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Must be at least 17 years old
  • Must hold one of the following citizenship statuses: U.S. Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Must be located in or willing to relocate to a host site area
  • Must pass a national service criminal history check
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Valid driver’s license and car, and/or dependable transportation  
  • Must have a personal commitment to climate action and environmental stewardship
  • Motivated team leader with exceptional organizational skills 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and comfortable with public speaking

 

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with environmental education, teaching, or tutoring
    • Experience engaging community partners and/or college students 
  • Experience with outreach, volunteer recruitment & management, or event planning
  • Experience in environmental education, environmental stewardship, sustainability, or home energy efficiency

 

Training Requirements:

All CCAC Members must attend a comprehensive week-long orientation at the beginning of their service term. Orientation for the TQT Environmental Education Cooridnator will take place virtually via Zoom. Additionally, members are expected to engage in ongoing training sessions throughout their service. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to climate change, outreach and public awareness, volunteer recruitment, fostering community partnerships, enhancing home energy efficiency, organizing community education events, promoting Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB), understanding ecosystem health, and exploring green job opportunities.

 

Benefits:

The CCAC Environmental Education Coordinator will receive AmeriCorps benefits, including a living stipend and Segal Education Award. The living stipend is $12,000 total for the service term. It will be distributed evenly in bi-monthly installments and is taxable income. The $4,826.50 Segal Education Award is contingent upon the successful completion of the program and can be used to pay for college or technical school or to pay back qualified student loans.
