UKCEH is looking for an experienced Engineering Workshop Technician to join our 600- strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

We are excited to be recruiting for this key role to develop and maintain our Lancaster Engineering Workshop, as well as managing our smaller workshop based at our Bangor, North Wales site.  You will be part of the Wallingford based Land Surface Flux Measurement Group. Your role will involve lone working at the Lancaster site, with support from the local Workplace team.

 

Your skills will be invaluable to our science community. This is an exciting opportunity to help optimise and develop the workshops to meet business and project needs.  You’ll be part of an active research focussed team at our site on the Lancaster University Campus, developing leading-edge monitoring networks and bespoke experimental equipment for all manner of environmental research.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Day to day responsibility for the operation and management of a small machine shop (conventional lathe, milling machine, welding equipment, wood working machinery, abrasive wheels/machines and hand tools)
  • Set up, installation, continuous development and maintenance of workshop facilities – including procurement of stock, risk assessments and Health and Safety Management of both the Lancaster workshop, and a smaller facility in Bangor, North Wales, requiring once a month visits
  • Coordinating daily priorities to deadlines and within budget
  • Collaborating with scientists to design and build, often from a sketch of an idea or producing engineering drawings to translate ideas
  • Integration and wiring of sensors and data loggers
  • Installing equipment at remote locations

 

For the role of Engineering Workshop Technician, we’re looking for somebody who:

  • Has a HND/C qualified or BTEC advanced diploma and/or time-served experience
  • Has proven ability to translate verbal requirements into finished engineered products
  • Is willing to perform in a variety of roles: design and drawing (CAD – Solidworks preferred), hands-on machining, field installation, and management
  • Has examples of the ability to make bespoke mechanical equipment to meet the needs of field scientists, or similar prototype applications
  • Is competent in precision machining, with a range of materials and techniques, including electrical engineering
  • Has the ability to manage subcontracting small engineering jobs, building great working relationships with suppliers
  • Is willing to undertake lone working outdoor fieldwork throughout the year, with occasional overnight stays
  • Has a full driving licence
