NEW HIGHER PAY: $34,936 – $61,137
The Challenge
We’re looking for an entry-level Engineering Technician to join our Kinston Resident Engineering team as a project inspector  on roadway and structure projects.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Support senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts.
    • Monitor contractors’ daily operations to ensure compliance with contracts, plans, and specifications.
    • Observe and document contractor operations.
    • Make measurements and calculations of pay quantities.
    • Perform standardized material sampling and testing.
    • Work as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors.
    • Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
    • Obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.
    • Safely operate a state-owned vehicle.
What You Bring
    • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
    • Customer service experience related to solving problems involving explaining complicated engineering concepts to customer groups.
    • Computer experience in Microsoft Office software and drafting software.
    • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
    • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
    • Communications skills to communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
    • Ability to apply math, such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
    • Close visual acuity to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.
    • Ability to exercise limited decision making and judgement and apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.
    •  Safety toe shoes.
Education & Experience
    • Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum; or
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Notes
    • You may be exposed to hazards, including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
    • You will be expected to work outside in varying temperatures and weather conditions and may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
    • You will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, climbing, and kneeling and lift up to 50 pounds.
