Full-Time Engineering Technician III – Traffic Services
Job Description
- Conduct independent, moderate to complex investigations/inspection work for operations and facilities overseen by the Division 12 Traffic Services Unit to assure compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), NCDOT Standards and Specifications, and contract agreements.
- Conduct Traffic Services data collection, including traffic counts, available sight distances, asset inventories, inventory condition surveys, etc.
- Use your computer skills in Microsoft Office and specialized databases, including TEAAS, GIS, SAP, and others.
- Lead traffic ordinances and traffic engineering investigations, including signing and pavement markings, and serving as LOGO/TODS Coordinator for Division 12 (survey and contract duties).
- Assist in the preparing and administering of purchase order contracts.
- Serve as a project inspector conducting independent moderate to complex inspection or survey work for signing and pavement marking installations to ensure project construction is in compliance with contract agreements, plans, standards, and specifications.
- Respond to concerns of citizens and other government agencies in a timely manner.
- Complete daily dairies, sample cards, material received forms, and monthly estimates.
- Use good decision making and judgment in the discipline of Traffic Engineering.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Working knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories used in the construction and maintenance of roadway facilities with limited supervision.
- Thorough understanding of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the NCDOT Standards and Specifications relating to these assets.
- Ability to document findings and take corrective actions.
- Communications skills to clearly and concisely convey information, verbally and in writing, to individuals and groups and listen and respond appropriately to others, including contractors, the public, and other government agencies.
- Ability to evaluate and apply engineering judgment to plan interpretation and other traffic related requests.
- Teamwork skills to establish positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, and contractors.
- You apply a safety philosophy and program to all operations.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office, online databases, and using math functions.
- Experience conducting routine compliance inspections with contract agreements, standards/codes, and specifications.
- Experience maintaining/completing standard records, reports, and correspondence.
- Demonstrated ability to read and understand blueprints and construction drawings.
- Demonstrated ability to perform measurements related to distances and/or elevations.
- Experience conducting routine inspections for compliance involving purchase order contracts.
- Ability to program, deploy, and download electronic traffic data collectors.
- Ability to work in outside environmental conditions, including noise and hazards from vehicles/construction machinery.
- Ability to work at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Safety Toe Shoes.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline, and
- 3+ years of technician experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
