Full-Time Engineering Technician II – Transportation Construction
Job Description
- Serve as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects.
- Support senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts.
- Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications.
- Observe and document contractor’s operations, make measurements and calculations of pay quantities, and perform standardized material sampling and testing.
- Work independently and as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors.
- Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
- Obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.
- Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction, contracts, plans, standards and specifications.
- Experience in materials sampling and testing to evaluate acceptance.
- Skills evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
- Experience maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports including computer/iPad data entry.
- Good communications skills to work effectively with co-workers, contractors, and the public.
- Solid math skills including basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Good eyesight (glasses are ok!) to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.
- Ability to exercise limited decision making and judgement.
- Skills to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.
- Drive a state-owned vehicle in daily performance.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
- 2+ years relevant technician-level experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- You will be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic, and heights over water or traffic.
- You will be working outside in varying temperature and weather conditions.
- You will need to perform moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and be able to lift 50 pounds.
- We may need you to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required for any assigned project in Division 2.
- Safety toe shoes are required.
