Full-Time Engineering Technician II – Public Works
Job Description
The City of Tacoma Public Works Department is recruiting for the classification of Engineering Technician II to support the design section in the Engineering Division.
The design section is responsible for engineering the City’s transportation and major capital facilities projects. Projects include the design and drafting support for arterial and residential roads, bridges, sidewalks, bike lanes, landscaping and utilities required for these infrastructure improvements.
Engineering Technician II’s perform moderate sub-professional engineering duties in both office and field environments. Duties include performing drafting and mapping work using computer-aided drafting and mapping equipment.
Public Works is seeking a technician to support in-house design of transportation facilities. The Engineering Technician II will provide information for cost estimates and design to support traffic safety projects; such as active transportation projects, arterial street improvements, bridge improvements, and Local Improvement Districts for streets, alleys, small parks and or trails. The specific duties associated with the roadway and non-motorized projects may include drafting support, creating base map, calculating vertical and horizontal alignments, establishing the Right-of-Way, creating utility layouts, creating an established TIN surface, calculations and layout for ADA ramps and may include plan preparation for project advertisement.
Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent AND one of the following:
- Two (2) years of experience in sub-professional engineering related work and completion of a recognized engineering technology vocational education program which includes computer-aided drafting or mapping training
- Two (2) years of experience in sub-professional engineering related work and one-year relevant college-level engineering course work (Two-years of experience are equivalent to one year of education.)
- Four (4) years of experience in sub-professional engineering related work.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Washington State Driver’s license at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.
- Personal Protective Equipment and Safety Certificate may be required with maintenance thereafter.
