Full-Time Engineering Technician II – Project Inspector
Job Description
- Support senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts.
- Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications.
- Observe and document contractor operations.
- Make measurements and calculations of pay quantities.
- Perform standardized material sampling and testing.
- Work independently or as part of a larger NCDOT/consultant inspector team.
- Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
- Safely drive a state-owned vehicle in the daily performance of duties.
- Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction.
- Knowledge in understanding contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
- Sampling and material testing to evaluate acceptance experience.
- Engineering skills in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
- Experience maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
- Safety toe shoes.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certifications to perform material sampling and testing.
- Communications skills to communicate effectively with co-workers, contractors, and the public.
- Ability to apply math skills, such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Good eyesight to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.
- Ability to exercise limited decision making and judgement.
- Ability to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.
- Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, climbing, and kneeling.
- Strength to lift 50 pounds.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
- 2+ years relevant technician-level experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- You may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
- You will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions.
- You may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required for any assigned project.
