The Challenge
We are looking for an experienced Engineering Technician II to join our Kinston Resident Engineering team and serve as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects.
In this role, you will:
    • Support senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts.
    • Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications.
    • Observe and document contractor operations.
    • Make measurements and calculations of pay quantities.
    • Perform standardized material sampling and testing.
    • Work independently or as part of a larger NCDOT/consultant inspector team.
    • Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
    • Safely drive a state-owned vehicle in the daily performance of duties.
 
What You Bring
    • Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction.
    • Knowledge in understanding contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
    • Sampling and material testing to evaluate acceptance experience.
    • Engineering skills in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
    • Experience maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
    • Safety toe shoes.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain certifications to perform material sampling and testing.
    • Communications skills to communicate effectively with co-workers, contractors, and the public.
    • Ability to apply math skills, such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
    • Good eyesight to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.
    • Ability to exercise limited decision making and judgement.
    • Ability to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.
    • Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, climbing, and kneeling.
    • Strength to lift 50 pounds.
Education & Experience
    • Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
    • 2+ years relevant technician-level experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Notes
    • You may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
    • You will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions.
    • You may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required for any assigned project.
