Job Description
- Assists engineers and senior technicians in the implementation and administration of roadway and structure construction projects awarded to private contractors.
- Assist on projects ranging from minor to complex.
- Conduct inspections of every phase of a construction project to ensure they are built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Conduct routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standard/codes, permit, and specifications.
- Perform calculations, computations, and computer/iPad data entry.
- Serve our District office by working with counties, municipalities, contractors, and field support staff as the permitting technician to establish compliance with applicable engineering standards and guidelines.
- Assist with plan reviews for subdivisions, utility installations, roadway improvements, and prepare cost estimates.
- Process permits, including driveway, utility and non-utility encroachment agreements, road additions and abandonments, and other records and reports.
- Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
- Computer skills including office and drafting software.
- Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
- Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspections, and/or construction surveying.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive communications between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public.
- Communication skills to present in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
- Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic.
- Agility to traverse rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
- Ability to perform moderate physical activity including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.
- Strength to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to work nights and weekends as required.
- Strong ability to apply a safety philosophy and program to all operations.
- Ability to safely and legally operate a motor vehicle.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Safety toe shoes are required.
