Engineering Technician I – Driller Assistant
Job Description
- Identify the best method for penetrating subsurface materials to accomplish the needs of the supervising Geologist/Engineer.
- Identify changes in the subsurface conditions based on reactions of the drill equipment and test apparatus between test elevations.
- Mobilize complex drilling, testing, and sampling equipment.
- Operate heavy equipment, including trucks, trailers, and transport equipment to job sites. Our drilling equipment includes truck-mounted drills, ATV mounted drills, skid-mounted rigs and barge drills.
- Equip drills with the applicable tools and accessories including pumps, pressure hoses, water tanks, drilling bits, drilling rods, drilling casing, coring apparatus, bentonite mud, mud tub, standard penetration test apparatus, solid augers, hollow stem augers, Shelby tubes, adapters, and hand tools.
- Maintain drilling and testing equipment.
- Conduct frequent inspections and repairs to drill machines, testing, and sampling equipment.
- Maintain tool and equipment readiness.
- Learn from senior technicians about safe and efficient operation and maintenance of power drill machines, drill accessories, survey instruments and office procedures.
- Contact property owners to notify them of project activities on their property and obtain water well information.
- Contact utility companies to determine location of underground utilities on drilling projects.
- Demonstrated knowledge of water well/geotechnical drilling or heavy equipment operation and equipment maintenance.
- Experience performing normal drilling procedures like auger drilling, mud drilling, wash boring, rock coring, hand augering, rod sounding and probing, and communicating subsurface changes between tests from reaction of drill equipment.
- Experience safely operating and maintaining a chain saw and other power tools.
- Experience communicating work to be performed to property owners, obtaining water well information, and describing location of work to underground utility locating services.
- Strength to do heavy work including exerting ~100 pounds of force occasionally, 50+ pounds of force frequently, and 10+ pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- You must have or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License Permit within 30 days of hire and CDL License within 9 months of hire.
- A pre-employment drug test is required.
- Frequent overnight travel may be required.
- Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field; or
- High school/GED diploma, and
- 2+ years drilling or heavy equipment experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
